1 Master Course Outline PPO 150 Efficiency Energy Course Description: An overview study of energy efficiency concepts related to efficient and cost effective electricity use. Topics covered will be electricity terms, insulation, windows, lighting, HVAC, energy audits, and electric vehicles. We will also look at the societal and political influences of deregulation and lessons learned from industry covering the generation of electricity from current existing sources and a look at alternative renewable green energy sources including solar, wind, biomass, and ocean waves. 3 lecture hours. Vocational program course. May be used as a general elective for the AA degree. Credits: 3 Prerequisites: None Recommended Preparation: None Co-requisites: Concurrent enrollment in PPO 100 and PPO 151 Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion students should be able to: Explain basic electricity and energy terms Discuss the concept of overshoot and climate change Compare and contrast the "E" and "R" values of windows and insulation Define a sustainable house Show the proper applications of wind and solar Explain the different lighting sources and uses Explain the process of how electricity moves from generator to the home Analyze the energy saving potential in a home or business Classify different ways of heating water for different applications Compare alternative modes of transportation Course Resources/Textbooks/Website: Solar Living Source Book 30th Anniversary edition. Students who are considering withdrawal are strongly advised to consult with the instructor, advisor and financial aid prior to withdrawing.
