What else is on offer?
Nunthorpe Sixth Form aims to help students develop
essential ‘employability skills’ as well as academic skills.
Registration: Range of activities including mentoring
Mon 11.15: Briefing – news/opportunities/messages
Mon P3:
Tutorial lesson to develop skills needed for
the future and give relevant advice and
guidance on careers/unis/apprenticeships
Enrichment: the opportunity for students to do something
to help them develop new skills, have fun and
make them ‘employable’
BTEC courses
We offer BTEC Health and Social care with the following
options:
Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma – 6 units of work (= 1 A level)
Level 3 Diploma – 12 units of work (= 2 A levels)
Level 3 Extended Diploma – 18 units of work (= 3 A levels)
These courses are assessed as they go along and do not have
a final exam. They are graded as Pass/Merit/Distinction.
They are worth UCAS points equivalent to A levels, and are
accepted by the vast majority of universities, depending on
the course.
High Standards
Your children and yourselves have all signed a Learning
Agreement which includes the following:
• Excellent attendance and punctuality (arrive at 8.30)
• Complete all work on time and to best of your ability
• Mature and responsible behaviour
• Signing in/out
• Staying on site for all Independent Study periods
• Suitable dress
The Learning Agreement states that failure to do the
above will lead to Discipline Procedures.

Entries
In the Learning Agreement parents have signed to
ensure the following:
• Notify the Sixth Form of any absences by telephone
(01642 304550) or e-mail by 8.30am for each day of
absence.
• Refrain from booking any holidays in term time –
these will not be able to be authorised.
Please be aware that according to our Exam Policy any
student whose attendance drops below 90% may be
asked to pay for their exam entries.

Work Ethic
•On average a student should be completing a
minimum of 5 hours independent work per
subject per week
•This includes set homework, wider reading,
consolidation of notes
•We expect students to use their independent
study time wisely, and we give students advice
on how to study
•Unlike at GCSE (for some lucky students), the
amount of work put in will directly affect A Level
grades achieved.
Assessment
•Targets generated through GCSE results
•5 sets of assessment data collated. Data
Capture reports given to students – parents
informed by text when data is available
•2 Parental Review Meetings to discuss student
progress with the tutor(6 Jan 2016/27 April 2016
between 3-7pm)
•Tutors/HO6th can be contacted any time
through email and a ‘Snapshot’ report can be
generated at parental request
Enrolment into Y13 in Sep
2016
• Please be aware that enrolment for a second year in the
Sixth Form (September 2016) is not an automatic process.
• Students must meet the requirements set by the Sixth
Form. This includes gaining good enough grades throughout
the year to show students are working to their targets;
having a good attendance/punctuality record; having a
record of a good work ethic.
Enrolment into Y13 in Sep
2016
• Government changes to funding of 6th forms
from 2014 mean that a student repeating a year
on the same courses will receive no funding.
• Practically this means we cannot afford to
accept students to re-do Y12 if they have not
made the progress required to continue into Y13
• Larger colleges may be able to offer students a
re-sit year in these cases.
University Requirements
For a standard Honours Degree:
•Some universities will state the grades required
from 3 full A levels, e.g. ABB
•Some universities specify 3.5 A levels preferred.
This means students are required to have a 4th AS
grade
•Some universities state certain A Levels which
must be gained for specific courses, e.g. A Level
maths required for engineering courses

of Yr 13. Teachers will base their predictions on the
performance of students prior to this deadline.

Reformed A Levels
The Government has reformed the following A Levels for
teaching in Sep 2015:
Art and Design
Biology
Business Studies
Chemistry
Computer Science
English Language
English Literature
History
Physics
Psychology
Sociology
Reformed A Levels
•In these subjects the AS exam does not count towards the
A level.
•The A level will be examined at the end of Y13 and will
include material from the whole 2 years of 6th form study.
•After students receive the results of their mock exams (Jan
2016) they will have a mentoring meeting to discuss
whether they should be entered for the AS exam in each
reformed subject, or just continue and do the full A level in
Y13.
•For all other subjects students will sit AS exams in
May/June 2016 which will count as 50% of their full A Level.
Reformed A Levels
Example 1
Joe is taking Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Geography.
He has to do AS exams in Maths and Geography (as
these have not reformed).
He knows he definitely wants to do Biology and
Chemistry in Y13 as these are his strongest subjects. He
wants to study Biochemistry at university.
Therefore he is advised not to sit the AS in Biology and
Chemistry, but will do the full A levels in Y13, along
with either Maths or Geography.
Reformed A Levels
Example 2
Ben is taking Business Studies, Sociology, History and
Law.
He has to do an AS exam in Law (as it has not
reformed).
He is unsure of which subject to drop in Y13 as he likes
them all and is equally as strong in them.
Therefore he is advised to sit the AS exams in all 3
reformed subjects as well as Law. When he gets his
grades he will drop the weakest subject of the 4.
