September 2015 Parents and Guardians, Do you love art and wish to introduce the students of Glenwood to the world of fine art? Absolutely no experience is necessary! This is a great volunteer opportunity for anyone who has the desire to learn and share their appreciation of art. Our local chapter of Art Goes to School has been training parent volunteers at Glenwood Elementary, Media Elementary, Rosetree Elementary, Indian Lane Elementary, St. Mary Magdalen School and the Benchmark School, for the past 18 years by introducing students to famous paintings & sculptures by modern artists and classical masters. According to the AGTS web site: AGTS volunteers make fine art accessible to elementary school students; we bring to the children information in an impartial, instructive, informal presentation; we encourage the pupils to “look, listen, and feel” art. Art plays an important role in developing a child’s imagination and in appreciating the works of a wide cross-section of peoples and cultures. We use reproductions that run the gamut from cave to modern art. We include European, American, African-American, Native-American, Hispanic, Asian, Middle Eastern, and African works in our portfolios. The children learn about pieces from varied communities around the world. We use over 900 different prints by over 300 different artists in our presentations. Art Goes to School provides workshops and lectures to train our volunteers. There is no need for prior teaching experience or an art education background. We’ll teach you what you need to know. Art Goes to School is currently organized into chapters in 44 school districts throughout southeastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey. Each chapter sets its own meeting times and school visitation schedules. People of all ages who enjoy working with children and are excited about art become Art Goes to School volunteers!!
