September 29 the Board of Regents approved the State
University's plan to convert the College of Education at
Albany into a multi-purpose institution. Dr. Thomas Hamilton, President of the University, announces that in the
Fall of 1962 the college will begin enrollment in the liberal
arts and sciences program. Albany State is the first to adopt
this program which will eventually be scheduled for the
eleven state colleges of education. However, the primary
objective of these institutions will continue to be teacher
education.

C.A.I.T. (Court for the Adjudication of Infraction of
Tradition) has as long a tradition as its name. Those sixty- To Design New
five Red Devils who were recently tried and convicted now
realize that C.A.I.T. plays an important role in the Rivalry
"game." C.A.I.T.'s purpose is to try those freshmen who SUCEA Campus
CAM.
False Premises
Last week the News received a letter from a person who
asked that his name be withheld and that the name of a
fraternal group on campus be used in place of a signature.
The News has for years had a policy of printing only letters
which were signed, even though names would be withheld on
request. Since everything was apparently in order concerning this letter, it was published requested.
Upon further investigation, the editor has discovered that
the author was apparently not a member of this fraternal
group and that the person whose name he used, a person unknown to the editor and to the staff handling such letters.
did not write the letter.
The News is also disturbed that the name which was signed "leaked out." Apparently the informative "was looking
over the shoulder of the person who re-typed the letter for
the News." We have been told that the person who saw the
name was a member of the group mentioned and that he recognized that the person whose name was signed did not belong
to the group. Why did he not inform the editor then of the
mistake?
But the main issue concerns the real author. What purpose could a person have in signing a name other than his
own and calling himself part of this fraternity? Does he have
a grudge against the person whose name he used? Is he an
independent who was not invited to join either the group
mentioned or the group to which the othter person belongs'.'
Is he a fraternity member who would like to damage the
reputation of either or both of the two other fraternities? Otis he a member of the group whose name he used, a member
who was afraid to sign his own name?
Because of the harm this person has done, the News requests that IFC submit a resolution to the News asking that
we obtain written permission from a fraternity president before anything is published which might be inferred to represent a whole fraternity. Such a resolution would become a
permanent part of the News Board ethics. We would like to
suggest, too, that each fraternity give the News a list of ils
members and keep this list up-to-date.
Also because of this person, the News has found it necessary to request that any student wishing to submit a letter to
the editor must sign it in the presence of the editor and
present his student tax card as proof of identity, \ames will
still be withheld on request,
We regret that we are forced to make such a policy. We
Mill feel that most of the students at State College are honest
II H unfortunate that all must be penalized for the sake of a
few.

continually, and, in many cases, deliberately infract longestablished traditions of State College. If a freshman is
found guilty, appropriate penalty is decreed.
Refraining from cutting across Page Field may seem a
trivial "bit of nonsense" to you now; however, you will in
later years remember that "bit of nonsense" with fond
memories. C.A.I.T. enforces such traditions as these and
maintains their due respect.
C.A.I.T. is for freshmen and for upperclassmen alike.
When Rivalry rolls around each year, upperclassmen recall the days when they were freshmen; when, perhaps,
they too had direct contact with C.A.I.T. They remember
how trivial it seemed to them that they could not see the
face of Minerva until the Rivalry period was over. They
remember. It may be that the basis of tradition rests with
fond memories. So, when C.A.I.T. reminds the freshmen
what traditions are and what they stand for, upperclassmen are reminded as well. This is a tradition of State.

passing, Bill Burnett and Bob Pollero's receiving, and a h a r d rushing
defensive line, they were able to a m a s s 58 points while holding t h e
opposition to " z i l c h . "
While t h e score is s o m e w h a t lopsided, there is much lo be said
abou( the spirited team of TXO. When one realizes that they w e r e only
organized last year, and thus had to use belter than half their m e m b e r s
to field a t e a m , TXO's showing a p p e a r s to be better than c o m m e n d a b l e .
Pollero was the first m a n to hit the scoring column for the winners,
scoring on a left-end r e v e r s e from 20 y a r d s out after a few m i n u t e s of
the first period had elapsed. Soon after, q u a r t e r b a c k Crowell followed
suit, also hitting on a left side run. Two Crowell to Burnett touchdown
passes brought the score to 25-0, and by m e a n s of a TD p a s s to Chuck
Hunter, the " m e n in b l u e " lead by 32 points at the half t i m e m a r k .
Dick Matis took control of the TXO offense at the s t a r t of the second half and almost got it rolling, but the tiring squad could not respond
enough to put over a touchdown.
APA managed to push a c r o s s another 26 points in the second half,
with Crowell chucking four TD
passes, two to Fred Curtis a n d
one each lo Pollero and Burnett.
