THE AGE OF ANXIETY – DADA AND SURREALISM, INTELLECTUAL AND
CULTURAL TRENDS
The Age of Anxiety the rejection of tradition, inhibitions. “a brave new world”
Modernism
Avante Garde
Dadaism
Surrealism
Dadaism  In WWI people died under an alleged rationalism. The rejection of
this system of destruction led to Dada and a denial of the whole of western
culture. The artistic reaction was liberating, infantile, and sarcastic.
Surrealism  ‘to create an absolute reality, a super reality’. The enemy of
surrealism was reason and logic.
Type A :
reasonably traditional style, shading, perspective seeking to
illustrate dreams from the mildly puzzling to the bizarre (Salvador Dali)
Type B:
automatic methods such as doodling allows the unconscious to
prevail (Joan Miro)
Both movements juxtapose the familiar and the bizarre and attempt to
cope with the effects of war and evil
Demonstrate historical empathy (understand motives, intentions,
hopes, and fears of people in other times and situations)
Use a variety of electronic resources/search strategies
Task:
In groups of 2, research a Dadaist or Surrealist work and create a “pecha kucha”
power point based on the following ideas:
1. Who is the artist and what is his/her perception of ‘reality’ given time and
place?
2. What is the intent of the work and how does the artist achieve it?
3. How does this painting reflect the principles of Dadaism and Surrealism?
