No. 701.1 ROSE TREE MEDIA SCHOOL DISTRICT SECTION: PROPERTY TITLE: NAMING OF FACILITIES ADOPTED: February 28, 2002 REVISED: 701.1. NAMING OF FACILITIES 1. Purpose The purpose of this policy shall be to provide a method which shall appropriately name/rename facilities taking into consideration varied community interests, the needs of the facility, and the reason to bestow a name on a particular facility; to place a method of determination above personal opinion and gain in the administering of this policy; and facilities recommended for naming/renaming shall represent a noteworthy feature of that facility. 2. Authority The final responsibility for the selection of a name for a Rose Tree Media School District facility shall rest solely with the Board of School Directors. 3. Guidelines Whenever an individual or group wishes to suggest a name to the Board for consideration the following guidelines shall be implemented. Buildings 1. The person for whom a facility is to be named has been retired from Rose Tree Media School District for at least two (2) years. 2. The request comes from a recognized school related group. 3. The person has been associated with the Rose Tree Media School District for not less than twenty-five (25) years of service if after receiving a request and receiving additional information, it is the Board's judgment that the contribution of the named individual has been extraordinary. 4. The person's contributions have an appropriate relationship to the facility being named. 5. A request for the naming of a facility for an individual should be given to the Superintendent who shall appoint a committee of five (5) to nine (9) members to consider the request. At least one (1) member will be from the Board of School Directors as appointed by the President. Page 1 of 2 701.1. NAMING OF FACILITIES - Pg. 2 6. This committee shall inform the Superintendent of its recommendation along with rationale based on the stated objectives of this policy. 7. The Superintendent shall present the committee's recommendation to the Board. 8. The Board may waive any of the foregoing requirements if in the Board's judgment the contribution of the named individual has been extraordinary. 9. The Board's decision shall be final. Portions of Buildings 1. Requests for naming or renaming such facilities as classrooms, libraries, laboratories, auditoriums, and gymnasiums shall have the endorsement of the principal who shall present evidence of such factors as the honoree's contribution to education, exemplary character, and the effect of the naming upon school and community. 2. The principal shall submit the request with appropriate rationale to the Superintendent who, if in agreement, shall submit the request to the Board of School Directors. 3.
