ELEMENTARY SUMMER READING 2015 For Students Entering Grades K - 5 Check out RTM’s website at: http://www.rtmsd.org Click: Curriculum Curriculum Summer Reading 2015 HAVE A WONDERFUL SUMMER AND HAPPY READING! ELEMENTARY SUMMER READING LIST FOR 2015 Dear Parents/Guardians: Educators consider summer reading very important for developing life-long reading habits, for maintaining literacy skills and for promoting reading for pleasure. Studies show that children who continue to read during the summer months perform better when school resumes in the fall How exciting it is when children respond to literature in meaningful ways, by laughing out loud or making a connection with their own life experience. Here are a few suggestions to encourage them in this important adventure called Reading. Let them see you reading: Books, magazines, newspapers; they will want to do as you do! Limit TV viewing! Follow up your child’s latest interests with books. Ask your child questions: “What was your favorite part?” “Do you want to read the sequel?” Help your child create a library of his or her own. Go to a garage sale or your public library when they have a sale, and don’t forget that Amazon.com, Barnes&Noble.com and Borders.com sell used books too. Make it a treat to read in bed and don’t be afraid of cookie crumbs and a little spilt milk! Continue to read aloud to your child, even after he or she reads independently. Encourage your child to choose a book to read aloud to someone else. Play a summer reading game or join a reading program at your local library. A subscription to a kids’ magazine is a terrific gift. (Cricket, New Moon, and Highlights are some of the best) We encourage families to consult this reading list not just in the summer, but throughout the school year.
