Lecture Instructor: Susan Z. Herrick, Ph.D. Office: Torrey Life Science 470 Telephone: 860-‐486-‐5662 Email: uconnbiol1108@gmail.com (please note ‘biol1108’ not ‘bio1108’)
Office hours: by appointment TA Office Hours in our Teaching Assistant Room Laboratory teaching assistants will hold office hours in the BIOL1108 common room (TLS 89), the schedule of hours are posted on HuskyCT. You should attend any of these office hours for individual help with lab or lecture. You do not need to wait for your specific TA’s office hours to use this feature of the course. Texts and Supplemental Material: TEXT: How Life Works (custom text), Freeman Custom Publishing, UConn Biology 1108 edition (or a used version of the original text). If you purchased a used text, you may purchase the portal separately. LAB MANUAL: Principles of Biology II, Biology 1108 Lab Manual, University of Connecticut, Fall 2014 edition. CLICKER: “iClicker2” available at the bookstore. General courtesies expected: Discourteous activities are extremely distracting to your classmates, a waste of your productive time and disrespectful to your instructors. TAs attending lecture will ask you to leave lecture if you engage in these type of activities. Repeating such behavior after being asked to stop will be dealt with on an individual basis. Some basic courtesies expected of our students and instructors: -‐ Come prepared to both lecture and lab. -‐ Bring your clicker to lecture, every time. -‐ Be in class on time. -‐ Before attending lecture, lab or office hours, please turn off all personal communication devices and stow them out of sight. Cell phones are not allowed in class, please be sure they are off and stowed. -‐ Laptops are also not allowed in lecture. -‐ If you plan to spend your lecture time listening to music, texting, talking, sleeping, or online, please just stay out of lecture. Offenders will be dealt with on individual basis. -‐ We will occasionally have a guest lecturer in class, please give them your utmost courteous behavior and respect. -‐ Large lecture halls such as ours come with a few downsides, one of which is noise. If you must come to class late, please use the seats in the first row and seat available to you by the door. If you need to leave early, please use seats near the door. And of special note: Please do NOT start packing up early in the last few minutes of lecture. This is extremely noisy and disruptive behavior and it is not only rude to everyone in the room, it is contagious. I promise I will release you from lecture no later than our assigned time, every lecture. iClicker2: These points are earned through iClicker participation in a variety of types of questions given during lecture. Some questions will need to be answered correctly in order for you to earn the points and some will not. You will be able to earn three points per lecture up to a maximum of 90 points over 39 lectures. This means you can miss eight lectures with no negative impact on your points. Therefore, there are no make-‐ups for these point opportunities. Point calculations will be explained in lecture as well as posted in HuskyCT. HuskyCT: HuskyCT is the online course management software used by the University of Connecticut. If you have never used HuskyCT before, log into the web site (https://learn.uconn.edu), supplying your University NetID and password. You should see a link named “BIOL1108 – Principles of Biology II” under the heading “Course List.” Clicking on this link will take you to our HuskyCT home page. HuskyCT will be used for all course information and resources. HuskyCT also will be the only place you will be able to see your grades and course announcements. It is your responsibility to check our HuskyCT site daily. Snow days and Lecture: If the university cancels school for the day or has an early closure that overrides our meeting time, we will resume with the scheduled topic/exam at the next lecture meeting. Specific topics per day may shift as needed and will be announced. Snow days and Lab: If the university cancels school for the day, we will offer make up sessions (announced as soon as possible on HuskyCT). If the university delays opening until 10 AM, all regular morning labs will be run, even those that normally start at 9:00 AM. Early dismissal will be handled as needed. When in doubt, check HuskyCT for announcements! Do not rely on word of mouth. If you are still unsure if lab is cancelled, go to lab. Lecture policies and schedule: It is strongly suggested that you attend all lectures. Office hours will not be used to repeat lectures that were missed. If you must miss a lecture for some unavoidable reason, make arrangements with another student in the course to copy her/his lecture notes for that day. Lecture Exams There will be three lecture exams. Two non-‐cumulative lecture exams during the semester, a mid-‐term and an end-‐term exam. These will be administered in the University testing center in Arjona. We will supply details once the semester begins. Additionally, there is a mandatory cumulative final exam given during the scheduled final exam period. Check the Registrar’s web site for information about the time and place of the final exam. Do not make travel plans until after all of the final exam periods are announced. Missing the final exam will result in a grade of “F” or “X” for the course (http://www.registrar.uconn.edu/gradesans.htm). There are no make-‐ups for exams. Plan to be in class on the scheduled exam dates/times. If you know in advance that you will miss a scheduled exam, contact the Admin TA (uconnbiol1108@gmail.com) to arrange to take the exam early. The required documentation in all cases is the same as described in detail in the Laboratory policy section below. Laboratory policies: Labs are held in rooms 91 and 171 in Torrey Life Sciences. You are expected to attend all labs in the section for which you are registered. We do not have the ability to allow students to drop in on alternate lab sections. If you have a class conflict, it is your responsibility to resolve it in StudentAdmin within the Add/Drop period. It is not logistically possible to make up missed labs once the week has ended. When you miss lab, due to an unexcused absence, you will not be allowed to turn in the assignment for that missed lab exercise or to make up any quiz given on that day. This will exact a heavy cost on your earned points. Do not miss lab unexcused! When you have a documented excused absence from lab, it is your responsibility to make arrangements to sit in on another lab section during the same week for planned absences (sports, funerals, religious holidays, surgeries, etc). The documentation required for such instances is also your responsibility, please be prepared. For illness/injuries/surgeries, you will need a dated note from your doctor specifically excusing you from class on the days you missed or will miss. For family deaths you will need a note from the mortician. The Admin TA will coordinate such issues for the course (uconnbiol1108@gmail.com). Please note that visiting the infirmary on campus and obtaining a note that simply says you visited the infirmary on a particular day is NOT proper documentation for missing class/exams/lab. You must have a signed doctor’s note stating you will need to miss class on the particular day for which you would like to be excused. For University-‐sponsored sports or other activities that require a student to be off campus, you must turn in a formal letter (on University letterhead) from the team or organization advisor specifically requesting that you be excused from class on a particular day. To make arrangements and get approval to sit in on a different lab section, contact us on our course email uconnbiol1108@gmail.com as soon as you know you will be missing a lab and our Admin TA will reply. Please do not simply show up at another lab section; we cannot overload any section, and you will be told to leave. Without prior consent from the Admin TA, you will NOT be allowed to attend an alternate lab section, so again, be prepared with documentation and your schedule when you email us (uconnbiol1108@gmail.com). Quizzes: Quizzes are given at the start of lab. If you arrive after the quiz has started, you cannot take the quiz. Contesting a Grade: If you feel that there is a problem with the grade received on any assignment/quiz, you must submit a written statement to your TA which clearly explains your reasoning for thinking the grade given is incorrect. This must be done within ONE WEEK of receiving the graded work back from your TA. Cheating and Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Group discussions are great. The more you talk about a topic the better you will understand it. However, all graphs and written assignments must be generated/written by you and be in your own words. Your assignment should not resemble those of your classmates. Any cheating on assignments will result in a score of zero (0) points for that assignment. Further consequences will be based on the severity of the plagiarism. Academic misconduct: Academic misconduct in any form is in violation of the University of Connecticut Student Code and will not be tolerated. This includes, but is not limited to, copying or sharing answers on tests or assignments, plagiarism, misuse of clickers and having someone else do your academic work. Depending on the act, a student could receive a failing grade (F) on a particular assignment/test, a failing grade for the course, or be suspended or expelled from the University. The Student Code is available for perusal at the Dean of Students web site: http://community.uconn.edu/the-‐student-‐code/ Students with Learning Disabilities If you need special accommodation for testing (e.g. extra time), please visit the Center for Students with Disabilities web site (http://www.csd.uconn.edu/) and discuss your specific needs with the CSD staff within the first two weeks of the semester. Be sure our administrative TA, knows about your association with CSD well before the first lecture exam by turning in your papers to Dr. Herrick when the semester begins. Grading and Schedule of topics and assignments for lecture and lab: We will adhere strictly to the University grading scale below to determine your final grade. We do not ‘round up’ or ‘scale’ grades. There are loads of bonus points offered during the semester. If you are worried about earning enough points to get the final grade you desire, take advantage of all the bonus point opportunities as they are announced. Note that you can find out where you stand at any point in the course by looking up your grades in HuskyCT. Percent Letter Equivalent out earned Grade of our 746 pts

Below is our proposed schedule of topics and assignments. There may be minor changes to this schedule as we go through the semester and we will adjust as needed. Please note that lecture (daily topics) and lab (weekly topics) each have their own column and the total points per week are summed in the far right columns. Please note the dates of exams and do not make travel or medical plans for those dates. There are no make-‐ups for missed exams. Biology 1108: Principles of Biology, Spring 2015
