PATENTED AVOCADO VARIETIES

Over the years a number of avocado varieties have been patented by their owners or
assignees. Most patented varieties, like many of the innumerable unpatented avocado
seedlings, have had brief flurries of interest but have fallen by the wayside as being
unsuitable for commercial production. Perhaps the most famous or well-known patented
variety is the "Hass" which has become one of the two leading commercial varieties in
California.
Listed below are the avocado varieties patented with the U. S. Patent Office. These
appear in the Register of New Fruit and Nut Variety lists published annually in the
Proceedings of the American Society for Horticultural Science, 1944-1965, and in
HortScience, 1966 to present, Descriptions of the patented varieties are given in the
above lists.
