Name_____________________________________Date_______________________Class____________ Class Activity Project Ethics Directions The teacher will lead a class discussion on business ethics. Students will divide into groups of three to four students per group. Each group will develop and write down five ethical principles that should be used in a business setting (i.e., a pizza delivery business.) Read the business scenarios below, discuss, and apply the five principles to the three problems in the scenarios to determine the most ethical outcome. Designate one member of each group to write a one-page summary report of the group’s three outcome decisions and discuss the results in class. Scenarios John is a senior at Wakefield High School. He plans to attend college after graduation and major in business. To help with school expenses, he has been working at DaBepi’s Pizza as a delivery person for the past year. John drives his own car and has become very efficient in the delivery process. He often makes as much in tips as he makes in his regular paycheck. John takes pride in being an honest person and has worked hard to build a good reputation with his customers and co-workers. Recently on a Friday evening shift, he had several experiences with customers and co-workers that challenged his ethical principles. 1. The Company has a policy of no personal checks from customers. On a delivery to one of his best friend’s (Allen) apartment, Allen did not have cash and asked John to take a personal check. When he explained the company policy of not accepting personal checks, Allen offered another option: “I’ll just write the check to you John, and you can use your own money to pay for the pizza.” o Would it be a good idea for John to go through with Allen’s offer? (Remember to apply your five ethical principles to your answer.) 2. Later that evening, John was making a delivery on Washington Street and saw a co-worker (Cassie) in the backyard of a nearby house. She was sitting in a lawn chair, drinking a soda, and joking around with her friends. However, Cassie had clocked in at the same time John clocked in and was supposed to be out on a delivery run. o How should John address the issue? (Remember to apply your five ethical principles to your answer.) 3. At DaBepi’s Pizza, all drivers are required to use their own vehicles for pizza deliveries and must have liability insurance. During a break, John overheard a co-worker (Esteban) talking to a relative on his cell phone and discussing the fact that his insurance has been expired for two weeks. o How should John address the issue? (Remember to apply your five ethical principles to your answer.) Notes Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2015. All rights reserved. Name_____________________________________Date_______________________Class____________ Class Activity Project Spontaneous Speech Directions The teacher will lead a class discussion on the importance of taking the time for preparation and planning when striving to organize tasks as a leader. Students will print and cut out the speech topics below into small strips of paper. Place the topics into a bowl or container. One at a time, randomly select a topic from the container (without reading the title). You will have 15 seconds to collect your thoughts and then will be required to give a two-minute, spontaneous speech on the topic. (Designate a timekeeper.) During each speech, class members will take notes on what the speaker can do to improve. Next, the same student will take a sheet of paper and will be given 10 minutes in the hallway outside the classroom to prepare a formal two-minute speech and then given the opportunity to address the class again. (Be sure to time again.) During the second speech, the remaining class will take notes on improvements in the 2nd speech after the speaker has had time to plan and organize his/her thoughts. After all speeches are done, the teacher will conduct a short discussion on the value of preparation and planning when striving to organize tasks as a leader. Spontaneous Speech Topics o A leader you admire and why o The importance of honesty in the workplace o If you had to choose, would you rather have four years of experience or a bachelor’s degree if you were starting a new job? Explain why? o What is your favorite “app” on your smart phone and why? Notes Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2015. All rights reserved.
