Performance Objective The student employs appropriate research techniques to produce effective business communications. Specific Objective The student will be able to conduct interviews to obtain resource materials. Terms  Organize‐ to systematize.  Effective‐ adequate to accomplish a purpose.  Resource‐ a source of supply, support, or aid, especially one that can be readily drawn upon when needed.  Interview‐ a meeting or conversation in which a writer or reporter asks questions of one or more persons from whom material is sought for a newspaper story, television broadcast, etc. Time When taught as written, this lesson should take approximately 240 minutes to complete. Introduction
The main purposes of this lesson are to help students learn how to conduct an interview/interviews in order to obtain resource materials. Ask: Do you know what an interview is? Ask: Did you know there are different kinds of interviews? Ask: Can anyone name some reasons for interviewing? Ask: What, to you, makes a good interview? The interviewer? The interviewee? The questions? The Responses? A combo of all? Ask: Have you ever conducted an informal interview? Have you ever conducted a formal interview? Ask: Have you ever been a part of an informal interview? Have you ever been a part of a formal interview? Say: The purpose of an interview is to gather information from an expert or knowledgeable source with the goal of being able to obtain usable data. Say: There are some key points to conducting a good interview, and here’s a guide to help you know some different interview methods (ways to gather your information), how to set up an interview, and some “Dos and Don’ts” of interviewing. Interview Project Review and Analysis During the 1st week of school, students will have created personal, possibly electronic, Word Walls. The method and location will be established by the instructor. These are listed on Page 3 of this document. You can determine if you would rather each student complete his/her own survey, or you can double the number of required questions/responses. Use the file “Interview Information” to help students know some of the elements of creating and conducting an interview. You can have students conduct the interviews in class, or you can have them gather responses outside of class. Whatever method (some options are given in student instructions) is to be determined by you, the teacher. You can also take suggestions from the students, if you wish. Interviewing Project Instructions Objectives: To help students learn how to conduct an interview/interviews in order to obtain resource materials.  Day 1: Decide whether or not you want to work on your own or with a partner, and then determine 1) how you will conduct your interviews (see page 2 of this document), 2) who you will be interviewing (people in class or people outside of class). You can use the table below to help you organize your thoughts. Interviewee? How to Interview? Face‐to‐Face, Phone, Email, or Chat/Messaging 
Day 2: Create interview questions. You will create 10 questions for your interview (all interviewees will have to answer the same questions), or you can choose 10 questions from the questions provided (Page 2 in this document.)  Day 3: Conduct interviews and record information. You will gather and record information from five people. You will need to determine how you are going to record your information.  Day 4: Usable or unusable information? You will determine if the information you gathered from your interviewees will be usable or unusable. You will also determine what information you are going to report to the class. You decide the information you are going to report.  Day 5: Report information. You will report your findings in one of the following ways: o
