Course Title:
Printing & Imaging Technology
Session Title:
Creating Ads: Bringing It All Together
* This is Lesson #20 if used as part of the overall unit on Printing & Imaging Technology.
This lesson establishes the criteria for the final Desktop Publishing Project, but may be
taught as a stand-alone project if desired.
Lesson Duration:
Approximately two to four 90-minute class periods
[Lesson length is subjective and will vary from instructor to instructor]
Project overview:
Days 1-2: Understand criteria for creating ads required in the final project
Days 3-4: Students will create a half-page ad by personalizing the Donut Shop Ad from the
“Working with Layers” Lesson #13. Students will gather 3 of their classmates’ business cards
and add their own business card to create a Business Card Showcase on one of the pages of
their program. Students will also create a Sponsor List/Thank You page. Students will also
create additional ads (business and personal) to fill the remainder of the program for their final
project. Students will submit a rough draft of their final project program.
Performance Objective: Upon completion of this assignment, the student will create a
Business Card Showcase, a Donut Shop Ad and two other ads to be used in an event program.
The completed event program will be the final Desktop Publishing Project for this course.
Specific Objectives:
1. Create a Business Card Showcase for the final project program.
2. Create a half-page ad for a Donut Shop for the final project program.
3. Create a Sponsor List/Thank You page for the final project program.
4. Meet the established criteria for creating ads for the final project program.
5. Submit first rough draft of the entire final project program in digital form for evaluation.

Introduction
MI
Introduction (LSI Quadrant I):
ASK: Can you name some reasons for having advertisements in a printed
program?
SAY: Ultimately the reasons for having advertisements vary as much as the types
of events themselves.
Outline
MI
Outline (LSI Quadrant II):
I. Some reasons for having Advertisements in a
printed program include
A. Making Money $$$
B. Covering printing costs
C. Fundraising
D. Showcasing Sponsors
E. Showcasing participants
F. Building Community
G. Recognizing Event Participants
II. Some different types of Ads include
A. Business
B. Personal
Instructor Notes:
Note: Use the slide
presentation to go over each
point to help students
understand the different kinds
of ads and the criteria for
including ads in their
programs.
Ask students to name the
types of personal ads that
might be in a program.

III. Criteria for Printed Programs
A. Include Your Business Card
B. Add 3 Business Cards from your classmates
C. Create a half-page ad by personalizing the
Donut Shop Ad from the “Working with
Layers” Lesson #13
D. Include a Sponsor List/Thank You page
E. Use additional ads to fill the remainder of the
program’s pages
IV. The Business Card Showcase
A. Using the business card the student created
in the “10-up Business Cards” Lesson #15
and 3 other business cards from their
classmates, students will create a showcase
page in the program for their final project.
B. They should stack the images of the
business cards and add a ‘showcase’ label.
Note: The criteria are listed
here to help students see the
scope of the work ahead. The
details will be shown on the
following slides.
On a page of the program
which is 5.5”x8.5” with a
quarter inch margin, exactly 4
business cards will fit stacked
on each other. Together the
business cards will have
these dimensions; 3.5”x8”.
Adding a ‘showcase’ label fills
out the rest of the page.
V. The Donut Shop Ad – updated
A. Starting from scratch or using the edited
donut photo from the “Working with Layers”
Lesson #13, students will create a
personalized half-page ad that also conveys
a business.
Reorganizing the information
to fit the half-page space
(5.25”x4”) is the key. Because
of the round shape this task
will exercise the students’
analytical and creative minds.
VI. Sponsor List/Thank You page
A. Depending on the type of Event, this
information may vary. Plays, for example,
may have a list of Patrons who support the
arts. Recitals may have a list of parents or
sponsors that the organizers wish to thank.
B. What kind of list matches the event of your
program?
Some examples of other
kinds of information include
Boosters, Chaperones, VIPs,
etc… Lead the discussion for
what kind of list best suits
each student’s event, and
make sure they know what
kind of list to use before
moving on.
VII. How many more Ads do you need?
A. You need to fill up the remainder of the
program
B. Be sure to create Business and Personal
Ads
The diagram on the slide
shows the required elements
using a total of 6 ½ pages of
the program. That leaves 5 ½
pages for the students to fill
with extra ads.
Application

Guided Practice (LSI Quadrant III):

3
Help students understand some differences between Business ads and Personal
ads and what they are used for in a program.
Make sure the students know the criteria for adding ads to the program.
Discuss the dimensions of the Business Card Showcase. Help the students
understand the steps for getting the artwork (for their own business card as well as
the other 3 business cards from their classmates) placed in their program document.
The easiest and best way is to get the actual printable PDF file from their
classmates. If they use the physical business card they will need to scan it in order
to include it in their Business Card Showcase.
Discuss the dimensions of the half-page Donut Shop Ad. They will need to know this
to put another half-page ad with it.
Discuss what kind of Sponsor List/Thank You page information best suits each
student’s event, and make sure they know what kind of list to use.
Make sure the students understand how many more ad pages will be necessary to
complete or ‘fill out’ the remainder of the program. Encourage them to get real ads if
possible.
MI
Independent Practice (LSI Quadrant III):
Students will use their business card and 3 business cards from their classmates to
create a Business Card Showcase as one of the pages in their program.
Students will use the donut photo or their edited donut photo from the “Working with
Layers” Lesson #13 to create a half-page ad for their program.
Students will create a Sponsor List/Thank You page using the appropriate type of
information for the event of their program.
Students will create 5 ½ more pages of ads for their program. Some of the ads
should be personal as well as business ads.
Students will use industry standard desktop publishing software to layout the
advertisements (Donut Shop, Business Card Showcase, Sponsor List/Thank You
page), the front page, the computer illustrated map, and the “schedule of events”,
which will be on the center two pages of their program. They will submit this ‘rough
draft’ of their Final Project for the teacher’s evaluation.

4
Review the criteria for creating ads for the printed program.
Review the requirements and dimensions for creating the Business Card Showcase
for the printed program.
Review the requirements and dimensions for creating the half-page Donut Shop Ad
for the printed program.
Review the different types of Sponsor List/Thank You page information each student
will need for the type of event program that they are creating.
Review the number of pages (for ads) that the students will need to create in order to
‘fill out’ the remainder of their printed program.
Observe students’ progress, ask questions, and encourage creativity as they lay out
all of the elements in order to submit a ‘rough draft’ of their printed program.
Evaluation
MI
Informal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III):
Teacher will monitor the students’ progress while they use the desktop publishing
software to create advertisements and layout all of the elements for their program.
The teacher will:
… make sure the student understands all of the criteria for creating the different ad
pages (Business Card Showcase, Donut Shop Ad, Sponsor List/Thank You page).
… make sure the student knows where all of the elements will go in their program.
MI
Formal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III, IV):
The teacher will use the Creating Ads Rubric to evaluate the ‘rough drafts’ of the
programs submitted by the students. The teacher should also conference with each
student to provide one-on-one feedback of the student’s work.
Extension
MI
Extension/Enrichment (LSI Quadrant IV):
Students may wish to solicit real companies and individuals to create the ads for
their program in order to make their final project look more professional.
