Step 1
Carpe Diem
The Latin phrase carpe diem originates
from a poem by Horace. Today it is
popularly translated as “seize the day”.
The literal translation of carpe means
“to pick, pluck, pluck off, cull, crop, or
gather”. The poet Ovid, however, used
the phrase in the context “to enjoy,
seize, use, make use of”.

Carpe diem has influenced and motivated people through the centuries to not worry about
tomorrow but to take chances today. I can visually communicate the idea of “seizing the
day” by taking chances with unorthodox color combinations and by challenging common
conceptions about proportion and scale.
