Career Exploration Module – DAY SIX

Objectives

- Identify and explore career opportunities within the Arts, AV

Technology, and Communications Cluster

- Align personal interests and skills with a variety of AAVTC careers

Materials/Equipment/Handouts Needed

- Vocabulary List (student generated based on activities)

- Activity: “What Does it Take?”

- Activity: Goal Setting Handout

- Computer or O*net printout of occupation information

Introduction/Engage

- Choose a few students to suggest an AAVTC career that interests them. Select one or two and demonstrate how to find them on the

O*NET website, which will help serve as an example for how to navigate the site and find information on a variety of careers. Discuss some of the information found on the website and how that information is useful.

Activities

- Activity: “What Does It Take…?” (2 sheets/2 careers per student)

- Go over the activity & review how to navigate the O*NET site

- Students will share what they learned about their career and about the O*NET site

- Review any new terms that students came across during the lesson

- Add these to students’ Vocabulary Lists (from Day 1)

Lesson Closure

- Answer any follow-up questions that students may have

- As a review, identify and discuss some of the important information that can be found using the O*NET site

Assessment

- Assess verbal responses to questions

- Participation in all activities

- Completion of “What Does It Take?” activity sheet

- Completion of “Goal Setting” activity

Goal Setting Activity

Materials needed:

Goal Setting Worksheet

TEKS:

§127.4.(c)(1)(A)

§127.4.(c)(2)(B)

Approximate time:

15 to 20 minutes

Directions:

1. Provide a copy of the Goal Setting Worksheet for each student.

2. Review the worksheet with the students giving them examples and ideas.

3. After students have had a chance to complete item #1 of the worksheet, begin monitoring the students to make certain their goal is within the scope of an occupation.

4. After students have finished the worksheet, call on several students to share the results of their worksheet.

For the following questions, first write a goal for your life that is in some way related to one of your top three occupations. Then answer the questions as they relate to that goal.

1. Give each student two (2) copies of the “What Does it Take to Become A…?” worksheet and go over the directions with them.

2. Have the students use computers and the internet to follow the directions of the activity sheet.
