The event began with a surprise flash-mob by the grade 5 students, orchestrated by student teachers, Kelli McLeod and Kelsey MacIntosh. The luck of the Irish was with us all! Naramata Elementary Naramata Elementary held H2O Olympics in keeping with their water theme. All classes participated in a fun water filled day learning about different aspects of water in relation to Science. The highlight of the day was when the students had to rip open a frozen shirt and see who could get the chilly garment on first! The photo shown is of Charles and Ben in grade 4 learning how many droplets of water could land onto a penny. The school fair was judged by over 30 volunteers from the community. Grade 8 students Jessica Roth-Craine and Hannah Bozculak led the way with their project "What's your paw preference?" In total 19 projects were selected to represent McNicoll Park Middle School at the District Science Fair level. On March 13th the projects were judged and five McNicoll Park projects were selected to represent the district at the Regional Science Fair to be held on April 11 & 12 at UBC-Okanagan in Kelowna! Everyone wishes the following students good luck at the Regional Fair: Riley Kascak, Tayler Oldstad and Keirran Godbold, Connor McDowell, Nicole Josteema and Nikki Galbraith, as well as Leah Watts. A big thank you to all the McNicoll Park staff that made this event happen. Parkway Elementary The grade 5 students enjoyed a great day up at Nickel Plate – the weather was fantastic too! A big thank you to parents who went along to help. Every class enjoyed a 45 minute session with Bricks4kidz. Students had a great time with the Lego and certainly learned a lot. Thank you to the PAC for sponsoring this great event! The grade 3 classes had another super visit to the pool. The swimming lessons went extremely well. Thanks to the PAC for sponsoring this event! Breakfast club is running along very smoothly and the hot lunch is another big hit as well. Thank you to the many parent volunteers at Parkway. Mrs. Silvius' class watched an informative presentation on Cyber-bullying. Thank you to Daryl Meyers for this important information. The Parkway Talent show was a huge hit! All students all did a wonderful job and certainly displayed some great talent. Thank you to Mrs. Silvius for all of her hard work! The choir has been performing - they are sounding wonderful. Success Stories S uccess cess Sto S torie ries Princess Margaret Secondary Far too often we hear only the troubling or negative stories associated with young people. On March 13, 2012 three Princess Margaret students did something that helps change that negative perception. At lunch time on March 13, 2012, three Princess Margaret students Jon, Jamie and Jessica, saw a wheel chair resident of the Trinity Centre on Green Avenue fall out of her wheel chair. The three good Samaritans didn’t hesitate a second. They ran to the aid of the fallen senior and proceeded to assist her and ensured she was not hurt. As well they notified staff at the Trinity Centre. If the saying is true that the true character of an individual is shown when no one is watching then we are pleased with the character that these three individuals displayed on that day. Princess Margaret received a thank you card with the explanation of what happened as well as thanking the three students! That’s a great success! Summerland Middle A Literacy project that combines Social Studies, Language Arts and Community Connections: Students in Ms. Thorpes' division 7-2 met with and interviewed nine Senior citizens from Summerland. Some have been in town their whole lives. Students learned about what life, school and Summerland were like back in the 'good old days'. Students are compiling their interviews into stories and a book will be published using an online publisher called "Blurb". Each senior and each student involved will receive a book as well as some will be given to the Summerland Middle School library and the museum in town. The project is a great way to connect students to their local community history. Ms. Brittany Bell and Mrs. Linda Beaven are spearheading this project. The finished product will be available in May. More M ore News News ffrom Columbia Elementary Columbia Elementary staff met with the organizers of the Farmbag Fundraiser the spring of last year and decided to support this program and bring it to the families of the Columbia area. Things about the program that really appealed were: it supports local farmers, encourages the eating of lots of healthy organic fruits and veggies, and raises money for a "green" initiative at the school. The response to the program from the community has been very positive, each produce pick up day is a mini festive environment with people coming with their re-usable bags to "shop' at the school leaving with a big mixture of yummy, healthy fruits and veggies. The students see the array of produce lining the tables in the open area and the enthusiasm of all the shoppers lined up to pick up their order. People have been very happy with the quality and variety of produce. Columbia have raised close to $900.00 so far through their participation in the program and the plan is to put this money towards a composting program and/or community garden at the school. The program runs for two more months with the delivery in April being the final one of this school year. Everyone is pleased that we took advantage of the opportunity to be a part of the Farmbag Fundraiser! Uplands Elementary Success Stories S uccess cess S Sto torie ries The month of March was a celebration of: learning, achievements and students making a positive difference in our school and community Uplands Elementary had both team and class celebrations, as well as a whole-school SOAR celebration to recognize the positive actions of the students around the school. SOAR is an acronym for Safety, Organization, Achievement and Respect. Students earn tickets daily when seen demonstrating the meaning of SOAR. The tickets are put into a SOAR container and each day a ticket is drawn. Students are recognized during morning announcements, then they come down to the office for an Uplands SOAR pencil. When the container is full we have a whole-school award . On Friday, March 16th, Uplands had a SOAR assembly for the whole school with the theme, “Students can be the lights of our school and world.” Examples were given of how students have demonstrated SOAR throughout the school year and each student attended the assembly with a glow bracelet to represent being “lights”. It was a magnificent sight to see all the students waving their arms with their glow bracelets on! This was followed by a movie with message of making a positive difference (along with popcorn too). Also recognized were students who have earned points through the Accelerated Reading Program and members of the grade 4/5 Basketball Team for their teamwork, dedication and the strong skills that they developed this season. Uplands had a celebration for the team on March. 14th and each member was given an MVP certificate with an explanation of how every member plays an important role on the “team.” Success Stories S uccess cess S Sto torie ries West Bench Elementary INSTILL LIFE HAITI PROJECT Division 1 students have been part of assisting with another exciting INSTILL LIFE project. This InStill Life Global project took place in St. Raphael, Haiti in July and August of 2011. Three teachers from SD67 (including West Bench’s own Ms. Kay) travelled to Haiti with a group called Help Us Save Us (HUSU) to work with young people in art and literacy. All proceeds from the sale of these cards will go directly towards supporting these children’s education and summer camp experiences. Hope is turned into action with each image, and with every card sold, a child’s life will change! Cards are available from Ms. Kay for $3.00 each or 10 for $25.00.
