GIANT’S HEAD ELEMENTARY
Things are rolling!
November has been another busy month
at Giant’s Head Elementary:
They have been reviewing their school
wide expectations (Behave safely, Do your
best to learn, and be respectful to yourself and others). They have been using
their Grade 5 leaders during assemblies
to demonstrate “yes” and “no” examples
to their students.
What is Success?
NOVEMBER
SUCCESS 2015
They held an information meeting for all
of their parents whose children are a part
of the Grading and Reporting Field test.
Giant’s Head has six divisions taking
part in this innovative project.
The Grade 4 classes took advantage of
the natural surroundings of Giant’s Head
Mountain on TMO day. Learning in
natural spaces is so engaging for the
students.

with a little humble pie*

SUMMERLAND MIDDLE
Success at Summerland Middle
As the fall sports are wrapping up, we would like to congratulate the students on their
achievements this year. The students who have participated in volleyball, cross-country
running and field hockey have benefited from dedicated coaches who have focused on the
importance of skill development, team work and, above all else, sportsmanship. We would
also like to give an appreciation to the leadership students who have been scorekeeping
and working behind the scenes to make the school events so successful.
A highlight at Summerland Middle this month has been the whole
school engagement with the Student Vote. Teachers led their classes
through lessons that made students aware of the types of governments that exist, the principles of democracy, Rights and Freedoms,
the election process as well as the beliefs and platforms of political
parties.
SMS hosted an all-candidates forum
in which the local candidates
answered questions that were
student generated, and showed great
though and insight.
The culmination of this endeavor was
the school wide student vote. As a result
of the meaningful work and discussions
that occurred in classrooms, this process
was taken very seriously by students.

WILTSE ELEMENTARY
Toys for Tots to Teens
Hundreds of people turned out in November to help make Christmas brighter for children in the South
Okanagan this season. The 22nd Annual Toys for Tots to Teens had a new venue, but the generosity was
still there helping several organizations collect toys for children of all ages.
This year's event at Canadian Tire Penticton from 7am to 7pm, Tuesday November 23rd saw over 1,500 toys
donated, and $8,000 dollars in toys, gift cards and cash purchased at Canadian Tire. Canadian Tire
generously matched the donations which were purchased at their store bringing the total cash value this
year to over $16,000 dollars.
Those who donated during the day were treated to coffee and muffins from Tim Horton's throughout the
day, and to a burger or hot dogs in the afternoon courtesy of IGA Penticton.
Other highlights included performances by the Wiltse and Parkway Elementary School Choir, and the Get
Bent Belly Dancers, and or course, visits from Santa himself who posed for pictures with numerous excited
children.
