We play so many roles in our lives, and our brain has to be on the go all the time. If our brain has to be on the go, then that would mean our brain needs to remain fresh. Therefore, it is up to us to keep our brain from getting overloaded with a million message units. Hypnosis is a way to release the negative energy, a way to revive ourselves, revive our bodies and our minds, it is the "in" thing in today's society. Gina L. Spielman, licensed clinical social worker and certified hypnotist in Naperville and Oswego, reports that hypnosis/hypnotherapy can be extremely effective. Here's why: Children are like sponges. When we are born, our mind takes in everything (what we call "message units") and we have no control over it. At around age 12, we start closing off and develop what is called a critical area of mind. We start critically analyzing this material and develop a conscious mind, which handles about 12 percent of our mind power. It has several functions: It handles our willpower, logic, reasoning and ability to make decisions. Below this area, the subconscious represents about 88 percent of our mind power. It handles our expectations, associations, imaginations and primitive emotions. What we learned was through expectations and associations. These became our "knowns" deep in our mind. Some associations were good and some perhaps not so good. This subconscious mind accepts knowns and rejects unknowns. An unknown can be a very positive thing but can be perceived negatively because it's unknown and thus fear could be associated with it. When we open a door and start changing some of these expectations - expectations that have been learned - the person will be more apt to desensitize this and change the negatives to positives, therefore affecting outcomes. Hypnotherapy opens up the mind, lets it vent and inputs positive message units in order to affect outcomes. Hypnosis is pleasant and relaxing. People usually come out of hypnosis feeling relaxed, calm, alert and good. It is a safe and effective tool for people to make the changes they want to make in their lives. By instilling specific relaxation and deepening techniques, the therapist has more access to the subconscious mind and can place specific positive message units into the mind. Dreams during the night become a way for the person to vent out negatives from the subconscious and help the mind organize itself, all in a nontraumatic and therapeutic way. For this reason, dreams are often a focus of therapy when a client is involved in hypnotherapy sessions. Hypnosis and hypnotherapy can be used for anxiety, depression, trauma recovery, guilt, low-self esteem, fear, addictions, smoking, weight, relationship problems, job difficulties, stress, physical pain and selfdefeating thoughts.
