THE SENIOR LETTER 2016 Central Kitsap High School May 2008 I N F O R M A T I O N F O R S E N I O R S A N D T H E I R P A R E N T S Principal’s Corner The Central Kitsap High School Commencement ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 11th, 7:00 P.M. at the Kitsap Sun Pavilion. We look forward to this special event for all of our graduating seniors and their families. Each senior must meet requirements for graduation in order to participate in the Commencement ceremony. All fines must be paid before a student is allowed to participate in the June 10th graduation rehearsal and before participating in Commencement. Every effort is being made by our counselors and teachers to keep seniors and their parents informed of current grade and credit status. However, the ultimate responsibility for passing each class, achieving the required number of credits and meeting the additional graduation requirements (High School and Beyond Portfolio and state testing) lies with the individual student. A grade check form will be mailed to Running Start seniors who are enrolled in classes required for graduation May 13th; return this form to Mrs. Wildes by June 3rd. Seniors enrolled in make-up courses through Operation Graduation or other types of correspondence/online courses should have work completed before May 20th. If you have questions, please contact your student’s counselor or the specific teacher. Because of our large graduating class and the limited capacity of the Pavilion, tickets are required for admission to Commencement. Each senior will receive seven (7) tickets to Commencement. Seniors who desire additional tickets should seek unneeded tickets from other seniors. Seniors will receive their tickets at the June 10th graduation rehearsal (see related ticket article on page 4). This newsletter contains important information; we hope you read it and contact us if you have questions or concerns. We hope to have a memorable evening on June 11th and appreciate your support in making it so. Sincerely, Steve Coons Principal Commencement is a formal ceremony. We expect a climate that reflects the dignity the ceremony deserves. Students are asked to dress formally for the occasion; jeans, shorts, flip-flops and tennis shoes are not allowed. Students, parents and guests are asked to honor the School Board’s request that guests remain quiet and respectful during the graduation ceremony. Each graduate’s name is announced over the microphone and noise detracts from each announcement. We also ask that parents and guests remain seated during the ceremony and refrain from walking around as this is disruptive. In addition, the use of artificial noise makers is prohibited. These common courtesies will ensure that all students, parents, and guests are able to hear and see as each graduate receives their diploma. Seniors who disrupt the ceremony will be subject to removal from the ceremony and/or completing work detail hours before their diplomas will be released. We will arrange the seating in the Pavilion to best facilitate close views of the graduates and the stage. Handicapped seating will be available. Specific questions about seating arrangements for disabled persons should be addressed to Activities Coordinator, Katie Staker at 662-2528 or via email at katiest@ckschools.org. There will also be a raised area at the rear of the Pavilion for those using video cameras. Please remember that professional photographs and videos are available for purchase. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. A reminder that tickets are required for admission to Commencement. Disabled guests may sit in the disabled seating with one guest. INFORMATION FOR SENIORS AND THEIR PARENTS Attention Seniors New To CKHS Senior graduation candidates new to Central Kitsap High School since mid-December should see Mrs. Shaub in the main office to make sure a diploma has been ordered. Running Start Seniors If you will graduate from Olympic College with an Associates' Degree, please contact your counselor, 662-2440, by May 13th. A letter with specific instructions will be mailed towards the end of April. Library Materials Due May 27th The due date for all library materials including textbooks is May 27th. Seniors who need library materials beyond that date should make special arrangements with the library staff. The library's phone number is 662-2424. Official Transcripts Most colleges, universities and technical institutes require a final, official transcript from applicants sometime after completion of second semester. A final transcript is not automatically sent. All seniors must complete a clearance sheet which includes a final transcript request section. PAGE 2 Past-Due Fines Must Be Paid By June 3rd Seniors must pay all past-due fines by June 3rd. Fines should be paid to Mrs. Conner in the ASB Office, or can be paid on line with credit or debit cards by logging into https://touchbase.cksd.wednet.edu and entering the students last name and student ID number. Some Seniors In Danger Of Not Graduating Some senior parents will receive a letter from our Counseling Center indicating their senior student is in danger of not graduating. Each senior in danger of not graduating has been advised of his/her status by their counselor. Counselors will continue to communicate this important information to seniors and their parents. Letters will be mailed to parents of those seniors who have F's in classes required to graduate. In addition, letters will be sent to those seniors in danger of failing. Parents who have concerns or questions regarding this issue may call the school and talk with the individual teacher(s). This will ensure that parents receive accurate and up-to-date information. The best time to contact teachers is from 7:30-7:50 a.m. or from 2:35-3:00 P.M. Please check our website for contact information. PAGE 4 Commencement Tickets The capacity of the Pavilion after it is set up for graduation is just slightly over 3,000. With our large graduating class, we must limit the number of tickets each senior receives for his/her family. This year each senior will receive seven (7) tickets to Commencement. Seniors who desire additional tickets should seek unneeded tickets from other seniors. Ms. Staker will give seniors an opportunity to sign up for one extra ticket beginning on May 2nd. At this time it appears that the requests will be filled. However, no further tickets are available. Seniors will receive their tickets after the June 10th graduation rehearsal. Note: Souvenir tickets will be available after Commencement at the Pavilion. Diplomas The actual diplomas will be handed out immediately after the Commencement ceremony in the President's Hall. The graduate or one of their parents must sign for the diploma. Graduates who are unable to pick their diplomas up at Commencement may pick them up in the Counseling Office June 16th—July 1st. We will not release diplomas for those graduates with outstanding fees/fines or for those who did not turn in a senior clearance form. Running Start Students diplomas will not be available until we receive grades from Olympic College. Parents, please encourage your seniors to turn in all school-issued books and materials. A reminder that all library materials are due by May 27th. GRAD NIGHT 2016 NEWS: REGISTRATION DEADLINE May 20th, 2016 A new ruling from the Secretary of the Navy regarding base access requires us to submit the list of registered students with additional data, further in advance than in previous years. We are still working with the base, but at this time we may not be able to accommodate last minute registrations. PLEASE REGISTER ASAP for only $80.00 to guarantee a spot to Grad Night 2016! FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is Grad Night exactly? The CKHS PTSA Grad Night volunteer committee provides an all-night celebration for the graduating seniors. This event provides a SAFE, SOBER and FUN celebration for the graduates. They will be transported directly from graduation to Naval Base Kitsap – Bangor where they will enjoy dinner, games, dancing, bowling, swimming, prizes, entertainment and great fun until about 4:00am. Why is it held at Bangor? Why don’t we go away? One of the main reasons is to allow graduates to enjoy more activities rather than spending hours on busses. In addition, we have found that we can bring many, if not more activities to Bangor for a lower cost. By having the event at one location, participants generally have more choices as to which activities they would like to enjoy (when they were bussed to various sites they could only do the activity that was offered at that site). Finally, graduates get home earlier and can sleep in and still enjoy time the following day with visiting relatives. What happens after Commencement? There will be time after Commencement to pick up diplomas and take pictures with family and friends. It is a good idea to pick a place outside for families to meet. Many grads will change clothes and then volunteers check them onto their busses. A snack will be provided on their way to Bangor. How do we get home? The busses will bring participants back to the CKHS. Many parents pick up their graduates; others will leave a car for their son or daughter to drive home. We arrive back at CKHS at approximately 5:00am and recommend parents pick up graduates from the front parking lot at CKHS; as they will be tired! What have previous CKHS grads said about Grad Night at Bangor? I had a great time. The hypnotist was AMAZING. THANK YOU! The prizes were great. Everyone should go- this was great! That was incredible- it was so much more than I expected. It was great to see so many classmates; I wasn’t stuck with the same person on a bus all night. I’m glad I didn’t have to spend hours and hours on the bus like my brother. It was really fun – wow – so many fun activities to choose from. Even though I was exhausted in the morning I am so glad I went. Assistant Principal Craig Johnson, Assistant Principal “Dedicated to Excellence” April, 2016 Dear Parents/Guardians/Teachers of Senior Students: During third period on Tuesday, May 17th seniors will have the opportunity to attend a mock fatality crash scene presentation. This dramatic reenactment is very powerful and informative and will focus on the tragedies often encountered as a result of drinking and driving. It will give our senior students a look at the consequences one might face as a result of drinking and driving. Representatives from the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office, Washington State Patrol , Kitsap County DUI Task Force, CenCom, Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue, Airlift Northwest, the Kitsap County Coroner’s office, Silverdale Towing and Mothers Against Drunk Driving are involved in the planning and execution of this presentation. The mock crash will take place on Huey Field, the field/track located above the high school, and will start at approximately 10:00 am . The seniors will begin with a meeting in the cafeteria during 2nd period. The mock crash re-enactment is targeted at seniors approaching year-end festivities such as prom and graduation and has been presented here at CKHS for the past ten years. Each year the presentation has received high marks from students, parents and staff in attendance. The month of April is National Alcohol Awareness month. We are all aware of the impact drugs and alcohol have on our society. It is our hope and the desire of the organizations involved in this presentation, that the assembly will provide yet another opportunity to increase youth awareness of the dangers involved with drinking and driving. Our plan is to do all we can to insure this never happens to one of our students. On the advice of the presenters, some schools request students be left unaware of the assembly’s content thus having the greatest impact. We leave this decision up to you. We do encourage you to talk about the assembly with your student so he/she may better understand the problems associated with drinking and driving. Should you desire that your son or daughter not attend this assembly, please ask him/her to report to the Main Office with a note signed by you instead of reporting to the assembly. You are invited to join us for this event. Please call Mr. Coons at 662-2400 or Mrs. Shaub at 662-2402, if you have any questions.
