Duties and Responsibilities of the Immediate Past President
The immediate Past President’s term is a 2-year term. The immediate Past President is selected when
elected as President-Elect. The “presidential” sequence includes 2 years as President-Elect, 2-years as
President, and 2-years as Immediate Past President.
As of 2014, the duties of the Immediate Past President include the following:



Managing the process of the selection of the ICA Outstanding New Teacher Award. Criteria and
rubric for the award are listed on the ICA website under “Outstanding New Teacher Award.”
Coordinating/monitoring the nomination of ICA members and/or representatives for the
National States Advisory Awards (NSAC) and the CSCA Outstanding New Teacher Award. While
any ICA member may nominate candidates for Central States and/or NSAC awards, the Past
President’s role is to investigate potential awards and time-lines presenting options to the
Executive Board for ICA nominations for selected awards. Minimally, ICA Outstanding New
Teacher awardees each year may be submitted for Central States Outstanding New Teacher
selection process. NSAC criteria are listed below. CSCA New Teacher criteria available on their
website.
Reviewing the ICA Constitution with the Executive Secretary and proposing any necessary
constitutional changes to the Executive Board and ICA members to update and reflect decisions
made by the Board and/or membership. Revised ICA Constitutions should be submitted to the
Webmaster to post on the ICA website.
The time-line of responsibilities:
September (Term begins at close of ICA Fall Conference)




Attend post-conference meeting as past president.
Prepare newsletter items announcing the next year’s selection process for Outstanding New
Teacher Award sending announcement to the fall newsletter editor by newsletter deadline
which is usually mid-October. Criteria are on the website; the announcement needs to alert
members to be considering and planning for nominations in the spring.
Assist the president as requested.
Submit the ICA Outstanding New Teacher Recipient’s materials to CSCA.
February (1st year as Past President) Winter Board Meeting (via Skype)



Prepare for winter meeting by assisting president as requested in creating the agenda, reading
agenda and reviewing minutes of the fall meetings.
Review ICA Constitution with the Executive Secretary and submit any proposed changes to the
president to include in the agenda.
Coordinate with previous Past President the status of any nominations in process for CSCA
and/or National States Advisory awards.





Have prepared for Board consideration any nominations for National States Advisory Awards
and for CSCA Outstanding New Teacher Award; Board will offer input and decision on
individuals nominated for awards. CSCA deadline is typically April 1; NSAC awards deadlines are
usually May 15.
Prepare newsletter item for ICA newsletter editor announcing the Outstanding New Teacher
Award nomination process and deadline which is usually June 1—coinciding with convention
program proposals deadline. Send a version of the announcement to other outlets as well such
as the current IAAE newsletter person and the current IHSSA Executive Director for inclusion in
their email newsletters/communications.
Coordinate with the newsletter editor to profile any ICA member/affiliates recipient status of
CSCA awards to be presented at the spring CSCA conference.
Assist in generating ideas for and/or submitting program proposals for the fall conference.
Submit ICA’s nominations for NSAC awards by the May 15 deadline.
June (1st year as Past President)



Arrange for reviewers of the submitted packets of materials for the ICA Outstanding New
Teacher Award. Generally two reviewers are used with a third available in cases of a tie or split
decision. Past President or President often serve as the third reviewer.
Once reviews are complete and the decision is made, notify Executive Secretary who the
recipient is and send a congratulatory letter to the recipient (see sample included). Reviewers
conduct their review and provide recommendations typically by late June or early July so the
Executive Secretary has sufficient time to order and receive the award plaque. The Executive
Secretary orders the award plaque and brings it to the fall conference. The Executive Secretary
follows up communication with the recipient letting the recipient know that ICA pays for the
banquet for him/her and one guest.
Notify all other nominees of their award status, encouraging those who still qualify with years
of teaching experience to consider submitting materials for the following year.







Prepare for pre-conference, general session and post-conference meetings by assisting
president as requested in creating agendas, reading agenda, and reviewing minutes of the
winter meeting, the previous year’s general session, and the pre- and post-conference meetings
from the previous year.
Attend pre-conference, general business session, and post-conference meetings
Be actively involved with the conference by greeting attendees, attending conference sessions
and/or chairing/responding to assigned programs
Make special effort to greet Outstanding New Teacher Award recipient
Announces Outstanding New Teacher Award recipient at the banquet
Prepare Press release regarding Outstanding New Teacher Award recipient for alumni
association(s) and local newspaper(s) prior to or immediately following conference





Coordinate with the newsletter editor to profile the Outstanding New Teacher recipient in the
fall newsletter

NSAC awards presented at the fall NCA conference.
