University College London, Gower St, London WC1E 6BT
Dear Colleague,
I am contacting you on behalf of the UCL Association of University Teachers, to invite you to consider
joining the AUT, as have the majority of your colleagues.
All staff employed on academic or academic-related salaries are eligible to join AUT. This includes part-time
as well as full-time staff, clinical academics, administrative, computer, library and other academic-related
staff, plus research staff, irrespective of the source of funding. Scientific staff on the payroll of the Medical
Research Council are also eligible to join. We also recruit postgraduate students who are employed as
tutors, demonstrators and teaching assistants.
AUT is both a professional association and a trade union. Its role in higher education means that you can
claim the subscription as a necessary expense of your employment from the Inland Revenue. However, in
addition to trying to improve the university system as a whole, AUT works for better pay and conditions for
staff.
UCLAUT is the largest locally-based local association in the country, with approaching 1500 members, a
team of experienced local officers and an active committee. Whilst salaries and pensions are negotiated
nationally, we are involved in the local implementation of national agreements.
In addition, your conditions of employment are negotiated locally. For example, past meetings of UCLAUT
and the College have covered the employment of part-time teaching staff; a career structure and
promotions procedure for research staff; plus disciplinary, grievance and redundancy procedures for
academic staff. We have negotiated improved maternity leave, a bridging fund for research staff between
contracts, and improvements to the staff review and development scheme. UCLAUT is actively involved in
health and safety issues and the work of the College Committee on Equal Opportunity.
We hold regular meetings, have a College-wide system of Departmental Contacts, and produce a local
newsletter, so there is plenty of opportunity to keep in touch, put your view and become involved.
One of the most valued functions of AUT is to give individual members personal advice and assistance in
relation to their employment. Many more staff find they need such help and last year the proportion rose to
more than 1 in 17 of our members. UCLAUT can, if necessary, call upon the assistance of the full-time
London Regional Official and all the resources of AUT Headquarters, including in the last resort legal advice
and assistance. In these difficult times most staff have found it well worthwhile having the unique expertise
which the AUT can offer in this area.
I sincerely hope that you will join AUT. To do so, please complete the application form overleaf and return it
via the internal mail to Rob Jones, our administrator in the UCLAUT Office. If you have any queries do
please contact Rob x7230 (020 7679 7230) or (preferably) e-mail: r.m.jones@ucl.ac.uk or myself, we each
have an answerphone for messages out of hours. Local Association information is available on the
UCLAUT webpage: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/unions/AUT/
Yours sincerely,
