Transition Programme
Transition Programme 2015-16 (Senior Mentor Role Description)
The Transition Programme supports all first year students in their transition to university. This
transition can be a particularly stressful time for students as they adapt to a different way of life and
new academic demands. Senior Mentors play a key role in the Transition Programme by overseeing
and coordinating the mentors in their department. This is an excellent opportunity for students to build
on skills gained as a Transition mentor as well as to develop your communication, organisation and
leadership skills. Senior Mentors will be paid £150 at the beginning of second term. Please note that
you can only apply for the role if you have previously acted as a Transition Mentor.
Person Specification
We are looking for students who can demonstrate the following qualities:

Excellent personal organisation

Familiarity with your department and UCL as a whole with the ability to signpost students to sources
of support

Approachable and supportive

Excellent communication skills

Reliable, responsible and ability to use initiative

Ability to empathise with the needs of first year students and Transition mentors in department
Duties and Responsibilities
To be a Senior Mentor, you will be expected to:

Attend a 2-hour training session with mentors and an additional 1-hour training session with other
