Position Title :
PTC Unscripted Event Assistant
Organization :
PTC is a dramaturgically-focused theatre company that finds, nurtures, and advances
Canadian playwrights. From our new 4000 sf theatre centre in Vancouver’s Chinatown, we work with playwrights to develop new plays through tailored processes that include studiobased work, site-specific projects, and text-driven plays. We collaborate with companies to bring work to the public, and support community conversations about how and why we make theatre. PTC was established in 1973, and continues to lead in the development of new plays and new processes. Led by Artistic and Executive Director Heidi Taylor (SFU MFA
2002), PTC has a small and dedicated team: Kathleen Flaherty, Dramaturg; Belinda Bruce,
Communications Coordinator; and Lindsay McMahon, Operations Manager. Rice & Beans
Theatre (also SFU Alumni) manages our facility.
Project :
Unscripted is a series of three public events bringing audiences into direct relationship with the ideas, issues, and politics of playwriting. The events take place May 2, June 5, and
September 14. Through a curatorial process developed with the writers, we are digging into the inspiration and content for their new plays, and the communities they intersect with.
Playwrights Carmen Aguirre, Elaine Avila, and Dave Deveau have deep connections to their communities, and engaged writing processes that extend beyond the script. Each writer will design an event with music, speakers, film, and activities that draw the audience more directly into the conversation. We’ll connect with the Portuguese, Latino and Queer communities, but also to ballroom dance, food, and guns. As part of the curatorial process, we will develop the digital traces of the events to develop and maintain relationships with new audiences.
Description :
The Unscripted Event Assistant will work with the PTC team, reporting to AED Heidi Taylor, to implement the community engagement plan for the project (which has been developed), and to give hands-on event assistance in producing the May and June events. This role may be of particular interest to designers and production students, as the practical implementation of the event plan into the space will be a focus of the position. From an event planning perspective, the student will assist in implementing the site plan for each event to ensure appropriate audience interaction, lighting, sound, and hospitality plans that are integral to the writers’ conceptions.
Qualifications :
This position can be adapted to undergraduate or graduate level participation. It will appeal to students who are developing a curatorial or event-based practice, who are interested in the intersection between creative planning, community engagement and production planning. Interest in learning Excel as a planning tool, ability to track details and work to deadlines, basic skills in social media, basic math/budgeting interest, and good collaboration skills are an asset. Skills in space design (e.g. photo installation), technical theatre, video projection, or event management are an asset. Please note any unique language or community links you may bring to the project. We welcome applications from all disciplines, and are an equal opportunity employer.
Dates:
We have been planning the events since January, and have confirmed our spaces and participants. Community outreach and event implementation will be the focus from
May – early June. Assessing the first two events, and preparing for the third event will be the focus for mid-June through the end of term.
