Presentation of WP 1/13 activities ITU-T SG13 meeting Caracas, May 14th, 2001 Jean-Yves Cochennec Chairman WP1/13 J.Y. Cochennec FT R&D SG13 Caracas meeting, May 14 - 25, 2001 1 WP 1/13 activities • WP 1/13 is in charge of the management and the coordination of the two ITU Projects for which SG13 is the lead SG, i.e. the GII Project and the IP Project. • The GII (Global Information Infrastructure) started in 1996 ; • The IP Project started in 1999. • WP 1/13 consists in two Questions : • Q.12/13 (Global coordination of networks aspects). • Q.15/13 (General network terminology including IP aspects). J.Y. Cochennec FT R&D SG13 Caracas meeting, May 14 - 25, 2001 2 Activities on the GII • • The current state of definition of the GII has been finalised in 1999, the corresponding text (TD6 WP1/13) has only been updated to take into account the new Questions of 2001-2004 study period. For the short term, technical revisions have to be provided : – due to recent advances from related Questions or from other Study Groups. – to take into account the definition of the IP Project in order to harmonise and to avoid overlaps. J.Y. Cochennec FT R&D SG13 Caracas meeting, May 14 - 25, 2001 3 Activities on the GII • The recent introduction of the NGN (Next Generation Network) concept will impact on GII activities : the GII should take into account current proposal for NGN(s) which, in fact, follow the same philosophy • A result of the IP-Mediacom Workshop held last month in Geneva, is that ITU activities related to NGN may become the natural continuation of the GII • Therefore a complete revision / redefinition of the GII may be envisaged with the goal to focus on NGN as a means to implement the GII J.Y. Cochennec FT R&D SG13 Caracas meeting, May 14 - 25, 2001 4 Activities in the IP Project • The IP Project definition (TD7 WP1/13) has been recently updated (March 2001), some minor revisions are still to be provided. • The IP Project is crucial for ITU as it coordinates all activities related to IP in all Study Groups and also the relations with other SDOs, mainly the IETF. • The major goal of the IP Project is to assure commonality among the specifications related to all IP activities in ITU-T. • An important task is to verify that the IP Project is consistent with the evolution proposed for IP networks both in ITU and in the IETF. J.Y. Cochennec FT R&D SG13 Caracas meeting, May 14 - 25, 2001 5 Activities in the IP Project • In the short term, in each of the twelve areas of the IP Project, a thorough investigation will be organised in order to manage the current related activities in ITU, and to further refine the existing specifications. • An important actvity of Q.12/13 is to assure the promotion of the IP Project, i.e. to inform ITU-T Study Groups and SDOs working on IP about the role that ITU intends to play for the future standardisation of IP networks. • As a result, this Caracas meeting should provide a number of liaison statements to inform SGs and SDOs of the advances of this meeting.
