BA Ancient World: options for incoming 1st year students, 2015–16
In choosing your first year courses, you need 4 units in total. You need to choose 1 unit of Greek or
Latin courses at the right level for you, to choose a history and an archaeology course, and to select
your other options from the lists below, as follows:

Compulsory:
 0.5 unit CLAS1204 Approaches to the Ancient World (core course)
 At least 1 unit of Latin or Ancient Greek language courses
 At least 0.5 unit of History courses
 At least 0.5 unit of Archaeology courses
Options:
 Your remaining 1.5 units can be made up of a mixture of courses in Classical languages, literature /
culture, archaeology & history from the lists below, according to your interests.
 Up to 1 unit of this may be used to study elective courses from outside the Ancient World
programme.
 You should not start both Latin and Greek from beginners’ level in 1st year. If you wish to learn both
languages from scratch, you can take up your 2nd beginners’ level language in 2nd year (alongside
intermediate level of your 1st language).
ANCIENT LANGUAGE COURSES
You must do at least 1.0 unit of either Greek or Latin language.
These courses are taught by the Department of Greek & Latin and have codes starting with GREK or
LATN.
If you are a beginner:
 GREK1001 Greek for Beginners A (0.5, Term 1) & GREK1002 Greek for Beginners B (0.5, Term
2)
 LATN1003 Latin for Beginners A (0.5, Term 1) & LATN1004 Latin for Beginners B (0.5, Term 2)
If you have G.C.S.E.:
 GREK2001 Intermediate Greek A (0.5, Term 1) & GREK2002 Intermediate Greek B (0.5, Term
2)
 LATN2003 Intermediate Latin A (0.5, Term 1) & LATN2004 Intermediate Latin B (0.5, Term 2)
If you have A level:
 GREK2006 Greek Texts 1 (1.0, Terms 1 & 2)
 LATN2008 Latin Texts 1 (1.0, Terms 1 & 2)
HISTORY COURSES
You must do at least 0.5 unit of one of the following History courses.
These courses are taught by the Department of History and have codes starting with HIST.
The following two courses are specially designed for Ancient World students, and are the
recommended History course options for 1st year. Places on these courses are guaranteed for all
Ancient World 1st year students:
 HIST1011A Sources for Greek History (0.5, Term 1)
 HIST1010B The Romans and their Past (0.5, Term 2)
The following courses are also available, but places are not guaranteed. If you are interested in taking
one of these courses, you will need to contact the History Department to find out if places are
available. Places are allocated on a first come first served basis:
 HIST6102 The Near East 1200-300 BC: Empires and Pastoralists (1.0, Terms 1 & 2)
 HIST6105 The Roman Empire from Augustus to Theodosius I (1.0, Terms 1 & 2)
 HIST6106 The Hellenistic World from Alexander to the end of the Attalid Kingdom (1.0, Terms 1 &
2)
ARCHAEOLOGY COURSES
You must do at least 0.5 unit of one of the following Archaeology courses.
These courses are taught by the Institute of Archaeology and have codes starting with ARCL.
 ARCL1002 Introduction to Roman Archaeology (0.5, Term 1)
 ARCL1004 Introduction to Greek Archaeology (0.5, Term 2)
 ARCL1009 Introduction to Egyptian and Ancient Near Eastern Archaeology (0.5, Term 2)
CLASSICAL LITERATURE / CULTURE COURSES
These courses are taught with all texts in translation, and require no knowledge of Latin or Greek.
They are taught by the Department of Greek & Latin and have codes starting with CLAS.

 CLAS1205 Interpreting Greek Literature (0.5, Term 1)
 CLAS1206 Interpreting Latin Literature (0.5, Term 2)

 CLAS1301 Introduction to the Study of Language (0.5, Terms 1 & 2)
ELECTIVE COURSES
You may choose up to 1 unit of courses from outside the Ancient World syllabus. These may be
taken from anywhere across the university. You may wish to take other History and Archaeology 1st
year level courses beyond the ones listed here (e.g. courses on periods or places beyond the remit of
the Ancient World degree, which is the ancient Mediterranean and Near East); a modern language;
any other subject that interests you…
To investigate courses which you might take as electives, you will need to consult the website of the
relevant department for their course listings, and then visit that department to ask whether the
course you have in mind is suitable for first years / accepts outside students / has space.
