Th is paper de s cr ib es a new species o f m u r i c i d , FavaAtui paulboschi, from Oman. The s h e l l , operculum and ra du la are i l l u s t r a t e d . Th is spe cies was f i r s t n o t ic e d in December 1980 on Mas i rah, Oman and s in c e then 19 l i v i n g and 28 dead examples have been recorded from Mas i rah and t h e mai land near Muscat, Oman. There i s a small curved, s p i n e - l i k e ex te n s io n on t h e c a r i n a l worn in some specimens, but no o t h e r a x i a l The s p i r a l part of the va rice s, sculpture. s c u l p t u r e on t h e f i r s t t h r e e wh orls c o n s i s t s o f two heavy r o p e - l i k e t h r e a d s ; t h e r e are f i v e cords on th e body w h o r l , th e upper t h r e e being very s t r p n g w h i l e t h e a n t e r i o r ones are weak. These cords become c o a r s e r towards the v a r i c e s g i v i n g the impression t h a t t h e r e are deep r e c t a n g u l a r p i t s between them. The operculum is t h i n , pale h o r n - c o l o u r e d , w i t h a t e r m in a l nucl eus . The r a d u la i s muri cop sin e w i t h a s h o r t c e n t r a l cusp on th e r a c h i d i a n t o o t h which is s t r o n g ; t h e l a t e r a l s are s le n d e r and hooked. TYPE MATERIAL. Al so l i v e were marine worms, b r i t t l e s t a r f i s h , crabs and s co rp io n f i s h . DISTRIBUTION. VoivaXbLa. pauZboóchl has been found by K.R. Smythe and by Dr. DonaldT. Bosch a l i v e at Dhuwwah and Rass i e r . Mas i rah, under stones and a t Al Bastan and Qurm near Muscat on th e mainland o f Oman. I t has been found dead, u s u a l l y crabbed, a t most l o c a l i ­ t i e s w i t h rocks around the coast o f Mas i rah. it is rare. It It i s not common,.and on t h e mainland is not recorded under any name by Me!v i 11 o r Me Iv i 1 I and Standen f o r t h e Arabian G u l f , Gu lf o f Oman and North Arabian Sea, nor by any o t h e r au t h o r f o r th e area t h a i we have s t u d ie d (see Smythe 1976 and 1979 f o r r e f e r e n c e s ) , nor are t h e r e specimens in the B r i t i s h Museum (Nat ur al H i s t o r y ) (Townsend, Biggs, C h a ll en ge r and Sykes c o l l e c t i o n s e s p e c i a l l y ) , th e N a ti o n a l Museum o f Wales (Tomlin and Mel v i l ! c o l l e c t i o n s ) , th e Royal S c o t t i s h Museum ( v a r i o u s c o l l e c t i o n s from the Arabian Gu lf and Gu lf o f Oman), t h e Ferdowsi U n i v e r s i t y c o l l e c t i o n , Meshhed, I ra n , nor t h e c o l l e c t i o n s of t h e l a t e P r o f e s s o r M. To d a t e i t appears t o be r e s t r i c ­ ted t o Masirah and the nearby mainland - one o f t h e a ut ho r s (K.R.Smythe) d i d not fin d it in Dho fa r, Southern Oman nor in th e Un it ed Arab Emirates b o r d e r i n g on th e G u lf of Oman. ETYMOLOGY. We have pl e a s u r e in naming t h i s species f o r Paul Bosch, son o f Donald and E l o l s e Bosch, who has helped us a l l w i t h h i s e n t h u s i a s t i c a s s i s t a n c e in c o l l e c t i n g mollusca and h i s g e o l o g i c a l knowledge.
