Definition

A corporate body is an organization or group
of persons that is identified by a particular
name, and that acts, or may act, as an entity.

Examples:
associations
government agencies
religious bodies
conferences*

Corporate Body as Main Entry



Classify according to the subject
Cutter for the name of the corporate body
For monographs, add imprint date to make
each call number unique


Add a work letter to the date if there is more than
one publication within the same year
For serials, add a work letter to the last
Cutter

begin with “a” and in order of receipt

Assign the same Cutter to all publications by
the same corporate body in the same class,
including translations, editions, etc.
For non-jurisdictional corporate names,
ignore subheadings when establishing the
Cutter
For jurisdictional corporate names, base the
Cutter on the main entry and first subheading

Changes in the Heading
When the name of a corporate body changes
significantly, Cutter for the new heading
When the name change is insignificant, use the
same Cutter (e.g., change of a preposition)
Example:
Maryland State Board for Community Colleges

Works about Corporate Bodies
In a class where there are works both by and
about a corporate body, use the same Cutter
number.
 For the work about the body, add a 2nd
Cutter for the main entry.
Example:

