CBA Faculty Senate Curriculum Subcommittee Comments: Some concern regarding resource implications with
introduction of new course, Sports Economics
H. Isakson moved and S. Amin seconded to approve the proposals. T. Mcadams questioned the wisdom of adding a
new course to the curriculum in lieu of the present economic situation. He suggested that the resources could be
better used to teach a business core course and that the opportunity cost should be considered. H. Isakson noted that
in the Economics major the opportunity costs are focused on the field courses. The motion was brought to a vote and
all but T. Mcadams approved.

CBA Faculty Senate Curriculum Subcommittee Comments: Concerns regarding academic content and rigor,
S/F grading, implementation issues, and required versus elective status
H. Isakson moved and S. Amin seconded that the curriculum proposal be approved. Discussion ensued regarding
the non academic course content and resource implications. F. Moussavi explained that this is the opportunity for us
to communicate to our students the expectations we have regarding rigor and self-reliance and the responsibility we
believe they have to become professionally prepared. He added placing this component in the form of no-credit
courses is the best way we can find to formally deliver professional skills to business students. The first two courses
involve no more than 30 hours total of students’ time over two years. L. Wilson explained that the first two courses
are required for business majors and the students could then decide whether they wanted to participate in the last two
courses. It was noted that the description of the second course, Business Professional in Training did not include the
statement “required for sophomore business majors.” H. Isakson said that the statement should be placed in the
description before the package is sent to the University Curriculum Committee. He also asked about faculty
oversight for these courses and F. Moussavi said he would welcome any team of interested faculty to provide
oversight. These courses will be continuously evaluated and improved. R. Karsten said that the courses must have
solid student evaluations to remain viable. The motion to approve the curriculum proposal was put to a vote. All
approved except S. Wartick.

H. Isakson moved and S. Wartick seconded that the Accounting proposals be approved. M. Wartick inserted an
additional change. The Accounting Department has not had time to meet and will be considering two different
catalog statements. They will then decide which one to use. She asked the CBA Faculty Senate if they could
approve whichever statement the Accounting Department decided upon. The statements are:
“No accounting courses may be taken on a credit/no credit basis by an Accounting Major, an unclassified student, or
by an individual designated as CPA Advanced Study status, except 120:169, 120:170, 120:179, and 120:269.”
“No upper level (100 and above) accounting courses may be taken on a credit/no credit basis without written
consent of the department head except 120:169, 120:170, 120:179, and 120:269.”
G. Smith moved and S. Wartick seconded the motion to approve the amended proposal. The motion was
unanimously approved.
The meeting adjourned at 3:00 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
