UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN IOWA COLLEGE OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION FACULTY SENATE MEETING December 5, 2008 MINUTES In attendance: Chair: Accounting: Economics: Finance: Management: Marketing: S. Amin, H. Isakson R. Wyatt, M. Zaman T. McAdams, S. Wartick K. Iyer, D. Clayson Guest: K. Sadkowski Absent: R. Karsten, G. Smith, and M. Christ The CBA Faculty Senate met in CBB 323 at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 5, 2008. S. Wartick conducted the meeting in Chair, Rex Karsten’s absence. He introduced K. Sadkowski, Associate Professor of History, who addressed the Council regarding a new proposed Global Studies major. The attached curriculum information explains the proposal in detail. K. Sadkowski requested the CBA Faculty Senate’s approval for the new proposal. He indicated that there is a need for more international education at UNI and that this program addresses the need. It does not require any new courses and there is a limited role for the CBA. K. Sadkowski said that this program will give students an added credential and make them more marketable in the work place. Even though we have a global dimension to most of our standard courses, employers don’t see the global flavor of regular courses. This program will focus students specifically on the global arena, as well as language study. R. Wyatt moved and H. Isakson seconded a proposal to approve the new major. Discussion ensued. The proposal was voted on and passed unanimously with the following modifications. Instead of an interdisciplinary program offered by all five UNI Colleges, it will be “an interdisciplinary program that draws upon courses from all five UNI Colleges.” This will clarify ownership and responsibility for the program. In addition, the justification for the new curriculum stated that, “Global Studies will be an ideal primary or secondary major for any student interested in a career in government, business, international non-governmental organizations, foundations, teaching, and journalism and the media, among others; as well as graduate work in law, business, the social sciences and humanities, and area studies.” The word "business" will be stricken from the first part of the sentence; the rest of the sentence will stand as is. H. Isakson moved and M. Zaman seconded a motion to adjourn. The meeting adjourned at 2:30 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Linda Corbin, Secretary pro tem
