Aims and Objectives The aim of the course is to enable students to function at a pre-advanced level. Students should be able to understand and communicate in Swedish on a number of abstract matters. This means for example expressing their viewpoints on topical issues giving the advantage and disadvantages of various options. Language learning skills including selfassessment, individual learning strategies and monitoring progress will be enhanced. Functions - Understanding news and current affairs programme, providing the topic is familiar - Reading contemporary literary prose in easy Swedish Discussing familiar topics, accounting for and sustaining personal views Reviewing books /articles Talking about Swedish poetry Writing an essay, in support of or against a particular point of view Comparing and contrasting the work code in different cultures Speculating about the reasons for and consequences of some specific current issues Course Content: Main topics/themes to be covered - Family structure Swedish work market and work culture – cultural codes Nordic mythology and religion Nordic Runes Swedish poetry – an introduction Grammar - Transitive/intransitive verbs ( står/ställer, sitter/sätter/ ligger/lägger) Prepositions refering to emotions (avundsjuk på, bekymrad över, snäll mot, nöjd med) Possessive pronouns (sin, sitt, sina), quantitative pronouns (hel/all) Sequence of tenses in complex sentences ( Merging main and subordinate clauses (Jag såg honom springa till bussen) Conjunctions, expressing contrast (trots/trots att) Cleft sentences (Det var Anna som åt upp chokladen) Idiomatic expressions (i valet och kvalet; som klipp och skuren; hugget som stucket) UCL Language Centre Evening Courses 1 Linguistic Structures/ Phonetics - Stress, reductions and assimilations within in the sentence and intonation.
