UCL CENTRE FOR LANGUAGES & INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION Evening Courses Portuguese Level 3 Prerequisite for entry Successful completion of Portuguese Levels 1, 1+, 2 and 2+ at UCL Language Centre or equivalent elsewhere (upon interview with tutor) Term duration 10 x 2-hour classes Aims and Objectives The aim of the course is to enable students to function at an Upper Intermediate Level (vocabulary grammar, morphology, syntax and phonetics). Students should be able to communicate in and understand Brazilian and European Portuguese on a number of practical everyday matters. The course book is Novo Avenida Brasil 2 (Units 5 and 6) ISBN 97885-125-4570-7, with added content to also cover European Portuguese listening, speaking, writing and grammar. Language learning skills, including autonomous learning and how to approach some authentic material, will be taught. Some transferable skills will also be covered. Students will also learn from videos, radio clips and written articles and texts covering current topics, real life situations and news. The course will focus on speaking, but will also include listening, reading and writing skills. Tutors will use short clips from radio programmes as listening exercises to develop listening and comprehension skills. Websites: • Tutors will use resources from language learning websites and will provide links to support learning. A list of useful resources will be provided to students. Handouts: • Tutors will provide handouts with grammar explanations and homework.
