UCL CENTRE FOR LANGUAGES & INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION Evening Courses Portuguese Level 1 Prerequisite for entry For complete beginners or those who have had only very little contact with the language. Term duration 10 x 2-hour classes. Aims and Objectives The aim of the course is to enable students to function at a basic everyday survival level (basic vocabulary grammar, morphology, syntax and phonetics). Students should be able to communicate in and understand Portuguese on a number of practical everyday matters. Language learning skills, including autonomous learning and how to approach some authentic material, will be enhanced. Some transferable skills will also be covered. Functions - Greetings, introducing yourself and others Talking about yourself / Nationalities, addresses, professions Asking for the time Inviting people for dinner/lunch Asking for information Ordering food in the restaurant Asking how do you get to work, school, to a country (using transport means) Course Content: Main topics/themes to be covered - First contacts around nationality Occupation and centres of interest Numbers ,days of the week, months Arranging time and place Transport Talking about the time Invitation The table In the restaurant Linguistic Structures/ Phonetics - Basic rules of the pronunciation of spoken Portuguese UCL Language Centre Evening Courses 1 Grammar - Verbs ending in ar, plus verb to be Substantive – masculine and feminine Personal pronouns: Seu/Sua Prepositions: em + article Verb: to go, can, to have Immediate future tense Demonstrative pronouns Verbs ending in er: to like, to be (estar) Contrasting Ser and Estar Prepositions: de + article Learning Resources Books: - Main textbook: Avenida Brasil 1 Curso basico de Portugues para estrangeiros The tutor will be using different books for exercises and handouts UCL Language Centre Evening Courses 2
