German Level 2
(Common European Framework Level A2)
Prerequisite for entry
Successful completion of German Level 1+ at UCL CLIE or for learners who have studied the
language before, for instance up to GCSE level, and have some knowledge of the main
present and present perfect tenses
Term duration
10 x 2-hour classes
Progression
After 20 hours students may progress to level 2+
Aims and Objectives
The aim of the course is to give students an opportunity to revise their survival skills and
acquire more sophisticated ways of dealing with practical matters. This includes revision and
consolidation of vocabulary, grammar, morphology, syntax and phonetics. Cultural
awareness will be developed.
Functions

Talking about languages; giving reasons
Talking about family; describing photos and persons; expressing opinions
Planning and booking a trip; expressing suppositions (wahrscheinlich/vielleicht)
Talking about hobbies and interests; reacting positively, negatively or surprised
Talking about media; making a complaint
Expressing what one likes; reading a menu; order something in a restaurant; making
contacts

Linguistic Structures/ Phonetics

Basic rules of the pronunciation of spoken German
Grammar

weil clauses; comparative (with wie/als) and superlative (am höchsten/am weitesten)
dass clauses; possessives and adjectives (with dative); genitive
Modal verb sollen
Reflexive pronouns (sich ausruhen), temporal adverbs (zuerst, dann, danach), verbs
with preposition (sich ärgern über), indefinite pronouns (niemand, wenige, viele, alle)
Indirect questions with ob; adjectives without article (nominative and accusative)
Personal pronouns (dative: mit dir, mit ihm), relative clauses and pronouns (nominative
and accusative)
