Online course offered July 18-Aug 20, 2016. This course engages students in the use and development of pedagogical content knowledge for teaching grade 5, using an interdisciplinary, inquiry approach to teaching and learning in science and social studies. The purpose of this course is to 1) develop confidence and understanding for science and social studies content for teaching in a fifth grade context and 2) connect content and theoretical understanding to your teaching practice. This class will investigate strategies for implementing and designing integrated content that effectively meets the Ohio Academic Content Standards. The goal here is to help you think of ways to become an innovative teacher who facilitates learning for all students in their pursuit of knowledge. This course provides an overview of the intersections between science, science education, and race, gender, socioeconomic status, and sexual orientation. It focuses on examining the process of schooling and the hidden curriculum in science. This course will also explore indigenous science knowledge, science culture, and classroom practice as it relates to multiculturalism. This course is designed to aid the development of middle and secondary school preservice and inservice science teachers. Fundamental to middle and secondary school science teaching is an understanding of content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge and methodologies appropriate for science learning in secondary school. During this course you will participate in and develop hands-on activities, inquiry investigations, group discussions, engaging lectures, safe laboratory investigations, utilizing equitable teaching practices and the latest instructional technology. This course explores what science is like, including the nature of scientific knowledge and inquiry. Course emphasizes related research and standards to inform best practices in K-16 science instruction. Practical strategies for implementation will be addressed.
