FUNDAMENTALS OF LAW SUMMER 2016 COURSE DESCRIPTION Fundamentals of Law will introduce course participants to the American legal system, law, the role of the lawyer, and legal writing. We will learn about the structure and function of the legal system, and look at the process of resolving grievances through the courts. Additionally, we will review key substantive areas in criminal, civil, and constitutional law, highlighting controversial issues in each. Finally, we will learn about the different roles that lawyers can play, as well as their unique ethical obligations. Throughout the course, you will learn how to use legal terminology, conduct legal writing, and will have the opportunity to see law in action. COURSE OBJECTIVES Class participants will: • Gain an overview of the legal system and the process of case resolution • Recognize the difference between criminal and civil law and be able to identify key areas and issues in both • Become familiar with several landmark U.S. Supreme Court cases • Be aware of the varied roles of lawyers and their ethical obligations • Become familiar with introductory legal terminology • Learn how to read and brief a case • Observe and reflect on the legal system in action COURSE ASSIGNMENTS All assignments are due no more than 30 days after the conclusion of your program. 1. Class Participation – 20%: Class participants are expected to actively engage in class discussions, including answering questions about cases read in class. 2. Case Briefs – 30%: Class participants must complete three case briefs for cases read in class. Briefs should be no more than one page in length. 3. Law in Action Observation & Reflection – 50%: After the in-person meetings, class participants will observe at least 5 hours of law in action – in a courtroom, government agency, law firm, or other place – and complete a 5-7 page reflection of their experience.
