Postgraduate Seminar Series Thursday 29th November Room 564 5pm Mutual Information as a Nonlinear Measure of Correlation in Multi-point Measurements in the Solar Wind By Rob Wicks With increasing numbers of spacecraft in the solar wind new techniques for analysing multispacecraft data are in demand. We present results obtained using mutual information to measure correlation of fluctuations in the magnetic field, density and velocity of the solar wind observed by the ACE and WIND spacecraft. We show that there is variation in correlation length with the solar cycle, this has implications for research into coronal heating, solar wind acceleration and cosmic ray propagation in the heliosphere. The postgraduate seminar series is a series of informal talks run by postgraduates for postgraduates. All postgraduates are welcome and refreshments are always provided!
