611f1M fl110 HAY CROPS 1909 1947 Wheat, Oats, Barley, Rye, Corn, Hay STATISTICAL YEARBOOK Containing state estimates of farm production, price, and income, by periods from 1909 to 1947, published by the Division of Agricultural Statistics, Bureau of Agricultural Economics, United States Department of Agriculture; county estimates of acreage, production, average farm price, and cash receipts from farm marketings for the years 1944, 1945, and 1946 prepared by the Oregon State College Extension Service, Agricultural Economics Section; and county acreage and production figures from the U. S. Bureau of Census for the years 1919, 1929. Oregon State System of Higher Education Federal Cooperative Extension Service Oregon State College Corvallis Extension Bulletin 692 August 1948 Explanation of Terms (Unless otherwise noted) ESTIMATES are expressions of judgment regarding what is true at any given time based on incomplete data, past relationships, calculations, appraisement, and general knowledge of the subject under consideration ; they are published subject to revision. Tables of data marked "preliminary" are especially subject to further consideration and revision. FARM PRODUCTION AND FARM NUMBERS for the state as a whole are estimates published by the Bureau of Agricultural Economics, U. S. Department of Agriculture, except as otherwise noted. County numbers are estimates obtained from county agricultural agents and other informed persons, and adjusted to state totals except as otherwise noted. SEASONAL AVERAGE PRICES are the averages of prices received by. farmers at usual marketing points for quantities sold during the crop season. CASH RECEIPTS FROM FARM MARKETINGS in this bulletin are intended to represent the returns to farmers from products sold and are based on the crop marketing season in all cases except Table 1 which is on a calendar year basis. Type-of-Farming Districts Much of the data for the state has been broken down into the following districts : District 1-14/illamette Valley counties: Benton, Clackamas, Lane, Linn, Marion, Multnomah, Polk, Washington, and Yamhill. District 2Coast and Lower Columbia counties: Clatsop, Columbia, Coos, Curry, Lincoln, and Tillamook. District 3Southern Oregon counties: Douglas, Jackson, and Josephine. District 4Columbia Basin counties: Gilliam, Hood River, Morrow, Umatilla, Sherman, Wasco, and Wheeler. District 5Snake River Basin counties: Baker, Malheur, Union, and Wallowa. District 6South Central counties: Crook, Deschutes, Grant, Harney, Jefferson, Klamath, and Lake. Oregon's Hay and Grain Crops* 1909-1947 grain crops grown in Oregon include such cash PRINCIPAL crops as wheat, oats, barley, rye, and corn. Hay, while not as important a cash crop as grain, ranks first in farm value as a feed for livestock. This group of crops accounts for more than threefifths of Oregon's total cropland. Tables 1 to 4 contain data on cash receipts from farm marketings, price, acreage, and production of grain and hay in Oregon on a statewide basis. For state data prior to 1909 and county data from 1939 to 1943, see Extension Bulletin 654, "Oregon's Grain and Hay Crops, 1869-1944," published in April 1945. Cash Receipts Grain and hay crops rank first among Oregon's cash crops in cash receipts from farm marketings. During the 1940-1944 period, receipts from this group amounted to $29,153,400 (see Table 1). That was nearly two-thirds greater than during the prewar period 1935-1939. The increase was accounted for both by increased production and higher prices. A substantial increase in prices since the 1940-1944 period has accounted for further increases in cash receipts. Receipts from this group of crops reached a peak in 1944 at $42,479,000. Production then declined, resulting in smaller receipts in 1945. In 1946, both production and prices again increased. Cash receipts in 1946, at S50,927,000, were 20 per cent greater than the previous record year of 1944. They were 75 per cent above the 1940-1944 average and nearly 3 times the 1935-1939 prewar average. Preliminary estimates place receipts in 1947 at $64,792,000. Wheat is the most important cash crop of this group (based on cash receipts from farm marketings). Hay ranks second, followed by barley, oats, rye, and corn, in the order named. Prices Prices of grain and hay crops in Oregon from 1909 to 1947 are shown in Table 2. The peak price during this period was reached in 1947. The second highest price for most of the grain and * State data in this bulletin are based on various reports from the Bureau of Agri- cultural Economics, U. S. Department of Agriculture, except as otherwise noted. County data were prepared from information obtained from county agricultural agents, growers, dealers, warehousemen, feed manufacturers, and other informed persons to whom we are indebted for cooperation in developing the estimates. The sum of the county estimates is in agreement with the state total unless otherwise noted. This bulletin was prepared for publication by B. W. Coyle, Assistant Extension Statistician, and Mrs. Elvera Horrell, Junior Extension Statistician, under the direction of L. R. Breithaupt, Extension Agricultural Economist and agricultural statistics project leader for the extension service at Oregon State College. 3 EXTENSION BULLETIN 692 4 hay crops was reached from 1917 to 1919, just following World War I. The low point was touched during the depression years of 1931 and 1932. Growers in Oregon received an average of $2.19 a bushel (preliminary) for wheat in 1947. That was 208 per cent of the 19371946 average. The second highest price ($2.05 a bushel) was received for the crops of 1918 and 1919. The low point was in 1931 when growers received an average of 380 a bushel. That was only 36 per cent of the 1937-1946 level. Oats, barley, corn, rye, and hay also reached a peak in 1947. Oats averaged $1.11 a bushel, 196 per cent of the 1937-1946 average. Barley at $1.68 a bushel was 214 per cent of the 1937-1946 average ; corn at $2.55 a bushel was 243 per cent of 1937-1946; and rye at $2.03 a bushel was 231 per cent of 1937-1946. All loose hay at $19.60 a ton in 1947 was 154 per cent of the 1937-1946 average. The low point was reached for wheat and oats in 1931, and for barley, corn, rye, and hay, in 1932. For a complete record of seasonal average prices of grain and hay crops in Oregon from 1909 to 1947, see Table 2. Acreage and Production The principal grain items and hay listed in Tables 3 and 4 occupied approximately 2,717,000 acres or more than 60 per cent of Oregon's cropland in 1947. Acreage in 1947 was 6 per cent greater than either the 1935-1939 or the 1940-1944 periods: Wheat, oats, barley, and rye have increased in acreage since the 1935-1939 period, but decreases were recorded for corn and hay. Production has followed the trend of acreage in all items except hay. Hay production in 1947 was greater than prewar, in spite of a decreased acreage. Oregon's Grain Crops Tables 5, 6, and 7 are a summarization of statistical data contained in Tables,8 to 22 covering the five principal grain crops : wheat for grain, oats alone or with other crops for grain, barley for grain, rye for grain, and field corn for grain. It will be seen from the following tables that the Columbia Basin counties, District 4, lead other districts of the state in both area harvested and cash receipts from farm marketings. In 1946 this district accounted for nearly one-half of all grain crops harvested in the state, and over one-half of the cash receipts from farm marketings. The leading county is Umatilla. GRAIN AND HAY CROPS: HARVESTED ACREAGE, ESTIMATES, OREGON, 1935-1947p1 8 EXTENSION BULLETIN 692 Gilliam. Every county in the state reported some harvested acreage for the principal grain crops in the period shown. The importance of the grain crops in Oregon can be fully realized by ref erring to the following tables which show the total cash receipts from farm marketings for all three marketing seasons of 1944, 1945, and 1946 to be in excess of 124 million dollars. For acreage and production estimates of individual grain crops by counties, 1919 and 1929, see Tables 24 to 28. All Wheat Wheat is the leading cash crop of all grain crops grown in the state according to the cash receipts from farm marketings. In 1946 this amounted to nearly 39 million dollars. As can be seen from Tables 8, 9, and 10, Umatilla County leads all other counties in the state in acreage, production, and cash receipts. In 1946 this county harvested approximately 25 per cent of the wheat, produced about 29 per cent of the total production, and accounted for 32 per cent of the cash receipts from farm marketings. Other important wheat counties in the state include Morrow, Sherman, Gilliam, and Wasco. There was a steady increase in both harvested acreage and the seasonal average farm price in the three-year. period shown in the The greatest increase occurred between 1945 and 1946. Because of a lower yield in 1945 there was a 10 per cent drop in tables. production from 1944 to 1945 but not much change in cash receipts because of the higher seasonal average farm price. Oats for Grain The data shown in Tables 11, 12, and 13 are a tabulation of all oats grown for grain including oats grown alone or with other grains and oats grown with peas or vetch. The Willamette Valley counties, District 1, are the principal oat producing counties in the state. Of the total production of 10,614,000 bushels of oats in 1946, District 1 accounted for 8,242,000 bushels or about 78 per cent. Marion County leads in harvested acreage with about 14 per cent of the state total. Barley for Grain Barley acreage increased in all districts of the state in the threeyear period 1944-1946. The greatest increase occurred in the Wil- lamette Valley counties, District 1, although Klamath County in OREGON'S HAY AND GRAIN CROPS District 6 is the leading county in the state in barley production. Over a million bushels of barley were produced in this county in 1944 and in 1946. Rye for Grain Although the acreage of rye has shown a slight increase in recent years it is still a comparatively minor grain crop in Oregon. In 1946 approximately 74 per cent of the rye was harvested in the South Central counties, District 6, with Klamath County leading all other counties with about 47 per cent of the total rye harvested in the state. This county also accounted for about 57 per cent of the total production and roughly 69 per cent of the cash receipts from farm marketings. Corn for Grain The average seasonal price per bushel for field corn has increased considerably in the three-year period 1944-1946; however, because of the decrease in harvested acreage and less corn being sold, the total cash receipts from farm marketings showed a decline. In 1944 approximately 8 per cent of the total pro, duction was sold while in 1946 only about 4 per cent was sold. In view of the fact that the total production for this period was fairly constant it appears that more corn is being kept on the farms for livestock feed. Marion County harvested about 25 per cent of all field corn in the state in 1946. Census Reports. 846,642 24,860 788,450 Lake Total, District 6 33 34 EXTENSION BULLETIN 692 Oregon's Hay Crops All Hay The following Tables 29, 30, and 31 are a summarization of data contained in Tables 32 to 46 covering the five principal hay crops : alfalfa, grains, vetch or pea, clover, and grass. The South Central counties, District 6, are shown to have harvested the most hay mainly because of the large acreage of grass hay in this section. In cash receipts, however, the Willamette Valley, District 1, exceeds other districts of the state. On the basis of information shown in Table 31, Harney County led all other counties in acreage harvested, but Malheur County led in cash receipts from farm marketings. Total cash receipts for all hay increased to some extent in the three year period shown in the tables even though there was a 6 per cent decrease in harvested acreage between 1945 and 1946. For acreage and production estimates of hay crops by counties, 1919 and 1929, see Tables 48 to 52. Alfalfa Hay Alfalfa hay is the leading cash crop of all hays grown in the state according to the cash receipts from farm marketings. In the years 1944, 1945, and 1946 this amounted to over 5 million dollars for each marketing season. The harvested acreage, however, has shown a slight decrease for the last few years. The 1946 acreage was estimated as 95 per cent of the 1944 acreage. Malheur County leads in alfalfa hay production in the state. In 1946 this county produced about 30 per cent of the alfalfa hay and accounted for about 21 per cent of the cash receipts from farm marketings. Other important alfalfa hay counties are Baker, Union, and Umatilla. Grain Hay The majority of grain cut green for hay is harvested in the South Central counties, District 6, with the Columbia Basin counties, District 4, in second place. Each county in the state harvested some grain hay in the period shown. The leading county in acreage harvested for 1946 was Klamath followed by Grant, Umatilla, Jefferson, Crook, and Lake... The seasonal average farm price for grain hay has remained fairly constant in the three year period 1944-1946; however, because OREGON'S HAY AND GRAIN CROPS 35 of the decrease in both harvested acreage and production and a smaller percentage of grain hay sold the cash receipts have dropped considerably. Vetch or Pea Hay Vetch or pea hay is mainly a Willamette Valley crop. In 1946 this district harvested about 75 per cent of the vetch hay acreage, accounted for 78 per cent of the total production and cash receipts from farm marketings amounted to 85 per cent of the state total. Douglas County in District 3 is the only county outside the Willamete Valley which harvested any great amount of vetch hay. Some vetch or pea hay was harvested in each of the six districts but only in Districts 1, 2, and 3 was any sold". Clover Hay Clover hay, like vetch or pea hay, is predominantly a Willamette Valley crop. Table 43 shows that in 1946 this district accounted for about 64 per cent of the harvested acreage, 70 per cent of the total production, and 72 per cent of the cash receipts from farm marketings. Marion County leads the state in harvested clover hay acreage followed by Washington and Clackamas. There was about a 6 per cent drop in harvested acreage from 1944 to 1945 with 1946 showing a 1 per cent inci-ease over 1945. Grass Hay Grass hay is mainly an eastern Oregon crop with the largest harvested acreage occurring in District 6. Table 46 shows that in 1946 this district harvested approximately 55 per cent of the state total. Most of the grass hay is in Harney County which accounted for about 23 per cent of the harvested acreage in 1946. In proportion to the large acreage of grass hay harvested the cash receipts from farm marketings are low due to the fact that only about 7 per cent of the total production is sold. In eastern Oregon where the largest production occurs most of the grass hay is fed to livestock on the ranch. Table 29. As rapidly as possible to complete the data, statistical bulletins for each group giving acreage and production data are issued by the Oregon State College Extension Service. In some instances, where the need is urgent for specific commodity data, mimeographed Extension statisti- cal circulars are issued that are of value until the more complete printed bulletins can be issued. Other statistical bulletins are published from time to time, particularly for the purpose of presenting data that embrace the whole of Oregon's agricultural commodities or that pertain to farm marketing, prices, income, etc. The Oregon statistical bulletins and circulars are available from county extension agents or the College. Oregon agricultural outlook circulars To provide Oregon farmers with economic and statistical information on the agricultural outlook that will assist them in planning their farm production and marketing operations, the Oregon State College Extension Service issues timely agricultural outlook circulars. These are based on data and information of national and world-wide scope as well as data for Oregon. Liberal use is made of information from many sources. The following outlook circulars are available from county extension agents or from the College each year at the season indicated. Perennial cropstree fruits, small fruits, nuts, specialty crops, etc.January. Spring-sown annual cropsgrain, hay, seeds, potatoes, vegetables, etc.February. Fall-sown cropswheat, hay crops, seed crops, etc.August. Animal productsdairy, poultry, beef, sheep, hogs, etc,September. General agricultural outlookmarket demand prospects, farm prices and income, farm and living costs, land values, etc. November. Spot market news and reviews The Oregon State College Extension Service cooperates with the Agricultural Marketing Service of the United States Department of Agriculture and Radio Station KOAC (550 kc) in providing radio broadcasts and spot market news and weekly farm market reviews. This information, which is based largely upon the current day's gov- 61 OREGON'S HAY AND GRAIN CROPS ernment market news leased wire messages, is broadcast during a 15minute period at 12 :30 noon, and another 15-minute period at 7:15 in the evening. The spot market material deals largely with prices and market conditions prevailing in the principal markets for the day, but the market reviews contain much valuable information on general trends and conditions. County agents are supplied with copies of the weekly market reviews as issued each day. The weekly market review schedule at present is as follows : MondayOregon specialty farm products; and general farm price, cost, and crop review. 7:15 p.m. TuesdayPotato, truck, and tree crops review. 7.15 p.m. WednesdayEggs and poultry; and commercial feedstuffs and hay. 7:15 p.m. ThursdayMeat animals, meat, and wool. 7:15 p.m. FridayWheat, rye, and feed grains; and dairy products. 7:15 p.m. SaturdayPortland livestock; western livestock; Boston wool; and grain reviews. 12:30 p.m. OREGON'S PRINCIPAL ANIMAL INDUSTRIES 1930 1920 ...
