Counselor Education and Supervision (CES) Ph.D. Program: The mission of the CES Ph. D. Program at Kent State University is to prepare
research-informed and ethically sound counselor educators who conduct research, supervise, teach, provide leadership, and have a strong
professional counselor identity. The CES Ph.D. Program also facilitates their advancement as clinicians.
Also, if students have not previously completed the required coursework set forth by the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family
Therapist Board for Professional Counselor licensure, they will complete such coursework as part of their CES doctoral program.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING DIVERSITY: The Counselor Education and Supervision program at Kent State University has diversity

Option A: A full academic year of two consecutive semesters with 9 or 12 semester credit hours minimum each semester, for a minimum of 21

Option B: A full academic year of two consecutive semesters and one summer session for a minimum of 21 semester credit hours. Students
must be enrolled for a minimum of 9 credit hours of course work during two of these terms.

Students will also have 9 additional hours of CES specialization and 6 hours of elective coursework, for a total 15 hours of electives. In designing
these 15 hours, students will consult with their advisors about registering for additional courses (e.g., CES 77584 Writing for Professional
Publication) and consider courses in research design (e.g., EVAL 78713 Multivariate Analysis In Educational Research; EVAL 78714 Factor
Analysis In Educational Research; EVAL 78716 Educational Statistics II; EVAL 78728 Educational Statistics III; CES 70093 Q Methodology In

CURRICULAR NOTES
•
Note 1: KSU master’s students in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program are required to take CES 68128: Clinical Assessment in
Counseling (formerly titled Individual Appraisal in Counseling). This course is also a requirement of the CES doctoral program and
contains both Clinical Mental Health Counseling CACREP standards and doctoral level CACREP standards. At the master’s level,
students do not have to complete assignments pertaining to the doctoral level CACREP standards. In cases where master’s graduates are
admitted to the CES doctoral program, they can “make up” doctoral level CACREP standards via independent study per advisor approval
(e.g., one credit individual investigation in the elective category titled “Additional Courses Required Relative to Major Area of Study”). In
the above example, the requirement for CES 78128: Clinical Assessment in Counseling may then be waived, though for any waived
course, another course must be substituted for it.
•
Note 2: The total number of clinical hours accrued during CES 87571 or CES 78536 must total a minimum of 100 total hours, including a
minimum of 40 hours of direct service to clients
•
Note 3: Before starting CES 88292: Internship in CES students must have no more than nine (9) hours of coursework remaining, which
could include only the following: advisor approved electives; independent investigations; advanced EVAL coursework (e.g., EVAL 85517
or EVAL 85518); and/or CES 88281: Research Seminar in CES. Students must submit a written internship plan for advisor approval by
the deadlines stated in the CES Doctoral Internship Manual.

Note 4: Any changes a student wants to make to coursework (including specialization / elective coursework) must be approved by the
student’s advisors BEFORE the change is made.
