The Institute of Health
School of Health and Social Studies, University of Warwick
Introduction
The Institute, founded in 2001, is based within the School of
Health and Social Studies in the Faculty of Social Studies. It is
independent but connected to the Warwick Medical School.
It aims to:
• To profile externally health-related social science research at
the University of Warwick
• To link with staff in other Faculties of the University (WMS and
beyond) to develop multidisciplinary health-related research
with a strong social science component
• To support and foster individual and institutional capacity in
health related social science research in SHSS and the Faculty
of Social Sciences
• To develop user and carer involvement in teaching and
learning and research
Strategy
Our strategy is to:
 Develop and support high quality innovative interdisciplinary
research with internal and external collaborators, both within
the UK and internationally
 Give support to the development and management of healthrelated social science research projects within SHSS and give
opportunities for research leadership to academic staff and
research fellows
 Maintain and expand UNTRAP
Research
Research on health, medicine and social care research is
promoted and supported in the Institute of Health through a
number of Research Groups.
UNTRAP is an organisation that aims to promote the
engagement and involvement of users and carers from the
local community in research and teaching in health and social
care at the Universities of Warwick and Coventry.
• The activities of these groups nurture dialogue and promote
multidisciplinary research across the University and with
external partners.
If you would like more information on UNTRAP contact Andy
Gibson in the Institute of Health.
• Health, medicine and social care research is profiled internally
and externally through seminars and conferences and the
publication Update.
• Update is a briefing of recently published research distributed
to over 1,300 health and social care researchers and
practitioners
• www.healthatwarwick.ac.uk serves as a bridge and
gateway not only to the Institute but also to health, medicine
and social care research at the University.
Research Groups
The research groups have convenors, both internal and external
to SHSS, that meet periodically and hold seminars or plan
projects. Current research groups are:
