French 1B is a continuation of French 1A. It is a beginning level class designed
to teach basic French grammar and pronunciation and skills in speaking, writing
and understanding the spoken and written word. It also introduces Francophone
culture, geography and way of life as a means of developing an appreciation for
another culture and lifestyle through study of its language.

Requirements:
Attendance/Participation:
Due to the communicative nature of foreign language learning, it is absolutely
necessary for you to attend every class meeting. The oral and listening class
comprehension activities are elements of language learning which you cannot
reproduce by yourself. If you know you will miss class, or if you are ill, please
discuss this with me so you can make up the work. College policy allows for
four absences during the semester; after that, you may be dropped from the
class.
Homework/Assignments:
Assignments will include exercises from the Horizons workbook and lab manual,
which will be accessed through Quia, an online educational site. Exercises will be
submitted electronically and automatically graded; therefore, you will have
immediate feedback on how you are doing, and your scores will be reported to
me as well. Other assignments may be handed out in class or may be assigned
from the textbook. No late assignments are accepted except if you are absent
on the due date.
Tests:
There will be one test after each chapter. Each test will evaluate listening
comprehension, speaking, writing, reading and cultural knowledge. Other “tests”
may include oral presentations/skits/role-plays, a tape-recorded exam, and the
final exam. You must be present on test and presentation days. A make-up will
only be given if you have a documented emergency.
Quizzes:
Quizzes, announced or “pop”, will be given.
