It is a beginning level class designed to teach basic French grammar and pronunciation and skills in speaking, writing and understanding the spoken and written word. It also introduces Francophone culture, geography and way of life as a means of developing an appreciation for another culture and lifestyle through study of its language. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Express desires , opinions, and need in a variety of topics Distinguish usage of imperfect and simple past tenses Evaluate need for use of subjunctive mood in a sentence Recognize and employ the two “to know” verbs Locate and identify French-speaking countries of the world Compare customs among French-speaking countries and the U.S. Requirements: Attendance/Participation: Due to the communicative nature of foreign language learning, it is absolutely necessary for you to attend every class meeting. The oral and listening class comprehension activities are elements of language learning which you cannot reproduce by yourself. If you know you will miss class, or if you are ill, please discuss this with me so you can make up the work. College policy allows for four absences during the semester; after that, you may be dropped from the class. Homework/Assignments: Assignments will include exercises from the Horizons workbook and lab manual, which will be accessed through Quia, an online educational site. Exercises will be submitted electronically and automatically graded; therefore, you will have immediate feedback on how you are doing, and your scores will be reported to me as well. Other assignments may be handed out in class or may be assigned from the textbook. No late assignments are accepted except if you are absent on the due date. Tests: There will be one test after each chapter. Each test will evaluate listening comprehension, speaking, writing, reading and cultural knowledge. Other “tests” may include oral presentations/skits/role-plays, a tape-recorded exam, and the final exam. You must be present on test and presentation days. A make-up will only be given if you have a documented emergency. Quizzes: Quizzes, announced or “pop”, will be given. Grading: Attendance/participation Homework/Quia Quizzes Tests Final Exam 10% 25% 10% 45% 10% A final score of 73% must be earned in order to pass to the next level of French.
