Education for Peace DC Mission: To analyze, foster, and grow education programs for peace in the Washington, DC Metro region in order to make a more visible and collaborative local culture of peace education. Goals: 1. To map out trends in peace education across the DC community. 2. To identify important questions that are being asked and issues that are being addressed within the field locally. 3. To develop a collective narrative and articulation of the peace education work being done in DC. 4. To identify potential opportunities for peace education in DC, which may include: o Utilize resources from local peace education initiatives that have been gathered into a central place. o Advocate for policy supporting and fostering peace education o Engage more effectively with national and international organizations working in the peace education field. Scope: Local programs will be selected based on their focus on development through acquiring skills and knowledge in the following areas: o Violence prevention (anti-gang, anti-bullying, etc.) o Conflict prevention and resolution (peer mediation, social and emotional learning, etc.) o Restorative justice (behavioral management, peacemaking circles, positive discipline, etc.) o Global citizenship (human rights/international education, civil responsibility, service learning, multiculturalism, etc.) o Creating peaceable communities (environmental issues, community wide initiatives, etc.) Local programs selected will also include both formal and informal peace education initiatives: Formal Peace Education Initiatives: o In-school programming o Teacher and administration professional development training Informal Peace Education Initiatives: o After school programs o Religious groups o Neighborhood initiatives o Community organization programming o Other *The assessment will include a wide range of constituents including: teachers, administrators, students, practitioners, and eventually parents and community members. It will also be cognoscente to include a balanced range of: mediums, audience, age, and type/content
