Cooper Power Systems Announces Achilles™ Communications Certification
for SMP™ 16 Substation Gateway
Effort to provide utilities with secure, robust, and reliable network devices
is recognized by Wurldtech Security Technologies Achilles Communications Certification.
WAUKESHA, WI, August 30, 2012—The Cooper Power Systems SMP™ 16 Substation Gateway has
been awarded the highly respected Wurldtech Achilles™ Communications Certification, a functional
cyber security standard designed to improve the resilience of global critical infrastructure. This follows
the recently announced Wurldtech Achilles™ Communications Certification for the Cooper Power
Systems SMP 4/DP Distribution Processor.
The Cooper Power Systems SMP 16 Substation Gateway is a powerful and rugged platform, providing
utilities with secure and reliable data acquisition and management. The Gateway features essential
communication and data concentration for substation automation and integration applications. With the
most comprehensive list of standard and proprietary protocols supported in the industry, including IEC
61850, GOOSE messaging, IEEE C37.118-2005 (synchrophasor), DNP3 (Distributed Network
Protocol), and many others, the SMP 16 Substation Gateway is a vendor agnostic solution. It is also
compliant with the IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613 standards—critical to utilities that operate in harsh
environments—and now certified to Wurldtech Achilles requirements.
“The Smart Grid requires secure and reliable communications—characteristics that require careful
design and rigorous testing,” said Mark Thurman, president of Cooper Power Systems, a subsidiary of
Cooper Industries plc (NYSE: CBE). "We are proud that Wurldtech recognized our SMP 16 Substation
Gateway design by awarding the Achilles Communications Certification. This confirms Cooper Power
Systems leadership position as the provider of the most advanced and reliable data concentrators for
the energy sector."
Wurldtech, a prominent internationally recognized and worldwide provider of security testing for the
industrial and automation industry, offers its Achilles Communications Certification to assess the
network robustness of industrial devices, and certifies that these devices meet a formal and
comprehensive set of requirements and conformance. The certification process provides the operators
