Eaton Provides Flexibility and Reliability for Oil Extraction Operations with
Latest Multi-tap Transformers
WAUKESHA, Wis. … Power management company Eaton recently introduced its Cooper
Power series multi-tap transformers that are readily equipped to provide a safe, flexible and
reliable solution when running artificial lift operations in the oil field. The multi-tap transformer
offers up to 25 different voltage settings, allowing the low voltage output from a Variable
Speed Drive (VSD) to be properly stepped up to levels needed to power Electric Submersible
Pump (ESP) motors in artificial lift applications.
“In the oil field, crews are often faced with feeding cable down a hole that can be anywhere
from 2,000 to 20,000 feet deep as they work to provide voltage to ESPs,” said Adam
Peterson, market manager – oil & gas, mining, Eaton’s Cooper Power Systems Division. “Our
latest multi-tap transformers not only provide flexible voltage settings, but they also
demonstrate safety, reliability, environmental responsibility and quality that our customers
can always expect.”
Available in both standard and engineered-to-order designs, this latest transformer offering
can be designed to meet all VSD and ESP manufacturer’s specifications. Moreover, users of
these transformers can safely monitor fluid volume, top-oil temperature and pressure with
provided gauges while a cover-mounted pressure relief device provides protection from fast
pressure build up. Additionally, Eaton’s multi-tap transformers are the first in the industry to
utilize Envirotemp™ FR3™ fluid, a vegetable oil-based, high-fire-point dielectric coolant that

serves as an environmentally responsible and safer solution that can extend the coil
insulation life of the transformer up to eight times that of an equivalent mineral oil design.
Unlike most current multi-tap transformers, Eaton offers its multi-tap transformers as
Underwriters Laboratory® (UL) listed on the nameplate in the factory, helping avoid costly
field certifications. The transformer system also meets short-circuit testing standards per
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) standard C57.12.90.
