Cooper Power Systems Announces the
SMP 4/DP Distribution Processor
Latest addition to the robust family of feature-rich, secure and field-proven substation gateways
WAUKESHA, WI, November 29, 2010 – Cooper Power Systems, a division of Cooper Industries
plc (NYSE: CBE), today reaffirmed its position as a leader in advancing global smart grid
technology with the introduction of the SMP 4/DP, the most advanced automation and integration
platform of the SMP family product line. The SMP 4/DP Distribution Processor represents the latest
effort by Cooper Power Systems to support the electric grid with products that enhance reliability,
flexibility and future upgradeability.
The SMP 4/DP Distribution Processor is a powerful and rugged platform, providing utilities with
secure and reliable data acquisition and management. Its versatile and compact shape makes the
SMP 4/DP an ideal tool for both inside and outside the substation fence automation and integration
applications. Installed directly in protective relay enclosures or in the switchyard, this SMP
Gateway provides essential communication and data concentration features. With over 100
protocols supported, including IEC 61850 and IEEE C37.118 (Synchrophasor), SMP 4/DP is a
vendor-agnostic solution. It has also been designed to operate over a broad temperature range,
which is critical to utilities that operate in harsh environments.
“The SMP 4/DP is a robust, secure, and flexible data acquisition platform that bridges the gap
between substations and automation systems,” said Tom Pitstick, vice president and general
manager of Energy Automation Solutions, a strategic business unit at Cooper Power Systems
focused on Smart Grid solutions. “It also provides utilities with the advanced features required to
build intelligent solutions that meet NIST Smart Grid roadmap and security guidelines.”
