The Solution
The Context
Vattenfall AB is wholly owned by the Swedish state and
is the fifth largest energy company in Europe. Vattenfall
generates electricity and heat and delivers energy to
about 6 million customers in Northern Europe.
The Vattenfall group generates around 160 TWh and
sells 180 TWh of electricity per year. The annual
production and sales of heat is 34 TWh. Net sales for
2002 are 11 billion EUR.
In May 2003, Vattenfall required a Substation
Automation System capable of performing data
concentration of multiple substation IEDs, and of acting
as a gateway to its SCADA master system. The
objective was to access, concentrate and manage the
data originating from the remote IEDs and perform
Passthrough transparent connections with the relays in
order to access the event files and waveforms.
To ensure timely delivery, the company was looking for
an off-the-shelf hardware and software platform with a
proven track record.
Cooper Power Systems provided Vattenfall with
Cybectec SMPTM Substation Modernization PlatformTM
Gateway and Visual T&DTM HMI to meet the
requirements of the project.
The SMP Gateway provides the interface between the
various IEDs and the master systems. The SMP
Gateway Passthrough function was used to access the
event and waveform data from the relays, using the
same ABB SPA-Bus link as the acquisition data. With
the SMP Gateways Passthrough function, the data
analysis system can thus retrieve event files and
waveforms, even while the SCADA is performing data
acquisition.
To simplify the access to the event and waveform data,
Cooper Power Systems’ software development and
consulting group implemented a custom TCP/IP
socket-based interface to the SMP Gateways
Passthrough function. This interface allows Vattenfall's
engineering group to use the standard ABB waveform
analysis software to retrieve the data from the SMP
Gateway, through the corporate WAN.
The Visual T&D HMI is used as a local and remote HMI
for the maintenance and operation of the substation.
