Overview of the Series

Since its release, the iPad has been an important
email: events.iod@unh.edu
tool in achieving educational success for all students,
especially students with disabilities. Its accessibility,
reasonable cost, and plethora of available applications make it an incredible resource for both
students and teachers. This series will address the basics of operating an iPad as well as how to:
?
• Teach with an iPad.
• Manage iPads in a school.
• Use applications (apps) for specific disabilities and activities.
Workshops are limited to 25 registrants. Registration will begin ½ hour prior to the start of the session.
Participants will be eligible for staff development credits.

Event Policies
Advance registration is required and accepted in the order received. Registration is not complete
until full payment or purchase order is received. Payment or purchase order must be provided at
least seven (7) days prior to the event. Registrations received within six (6) days of the event may be
accepted (depending upon availability) if accompanied by full payment or purchase order. If an event
is cancelled or postponed, registrants will be given the option of canceling their registration, receiving
a full refund, applying their registration payment to another event, or attending the event if the event
is rescheduled. To receive a full refund, cancellations must be made in writing seven (7) days prior to
the event. Cancellations received within six (6) days of the event are not eligible for a refund.

Apps for Autism: Social Stories
and Visual Schedules
Date: March 5, 2012
Time: 4pm–6pm

This hands-on workshop will teach the basics of
owning and operating an iPad. Participants will
learn how to download and navigate apps using
10 different hand gestures; how to search the
iPad and the internet; how to copy and paste,
create notations, and highlight text; how to
perform a screen capture and upload photos
or video; how to use the available accessibility
features; and much more. All participants will
have access to an iPad during this session.
How can we enhance comprehension of language
and social situations and promote independence
in activities and transitions for students with
autism and other related disabilities? Get
visual! This hands-on workshop will review
apps for creating social stories and schedules.
Participants will learn practical guidelines
for these tools and which apps can provide
visual supports to meet individual needs. All
participants will have access to an iPad during
this session.
Who Should Attend: Beginner iPad users and
others interested in learning various features of
the iPad.

The iPad’s accessibility, reasonable cost, and
plethora of available applications make it an
incredible support for students with complex
needs to learn the general education curriculum.
This workshop will explore the many uses of the
iPad to support learning goals and objectives,
including how it can foster communication,
written expression, mathematical concept
development, and reading skills. All participants
will have access to an iPad during this session.

Apps for Autism: Behavior
Tracking and Video Modeling
Date: March 19, 2012

Behavior regulation and skill development can
be challenging for individuals with autism. A
number of techniques, including video modeling,
have been proven to increase skills and support
positive participation and social connections.
This workshop will demonstrate iPad and iPhone
apps used for behavior tracking, skill tracking,
and video modeling. All participants will have
access to an iPad during this session.

iPads have become invaluable tools in schools
across the country, but integrating and
administering iPads can be challenging. This
workshop will explore the various ways to
administer iPads in a school environment and
provide IT staff and administrators with the
knowledge they need to make integration a
success. All participants will have access to an
iPad during this session.
Specifically for the rehabilitation professional,
this training will emphasize the use of the iPad
for individuals of all ages with a variety of
physical and cognitive challenges. In addition
to hands-on experience with a variety of
apps, participants will receive a list of 200+
recommended apps organized by category. All
participants will have access to an iPad during
this session.
Who Should Attend: IT staff, administrators,
and others working in information technology in
educational settings.
Who Should Attend: Vocational Rehabilitation
professionals, employment staff, direct service
providers, caregivers, occupational therapists,
speech language pathologists, medical
professionals, special educators, and others.

It’s all free! Learn to populate your iPad with
dozens of free apps for learning to write, draw,
play music, read, do research, understand math
and science concepts, create a website, and
much more. Participants are encouraged to
bring their own technology (iPads and laptops)
with administrative access to download to their
computers and iPads.

Nicole Finch, MS
Nicole received her master’s
degree in occupational therapy
from UNH in May 2011. As part
of her graduate assistantship,
Nicole worked with Therese
Willkomm to provide AT
training to individuals,
rehabilitation professionals, and educators. She
developed and provided trainings on iPad use
for individuals of all abilities to professors and
students within the UNH education department,
as well as the IOD, Wentworth-Douglass Hospital,
and East Kingston Elementary School.
Dan Herlihy
Dan has been in the education
field for over 24 years, working
in wilderness programs for
at-risk students, in special
education classrooms, and as
a private consultant providing
training and professional
development to school systems. He presents
nationally on numerous topics and has written
numerous books and articles on technology
integration. His expertise is in taking diverse
technologies and connecting them together to
provide solutions for access to the curriculum.
Laurie Lambert, M.Ed.
Having come up through
the education ranks as a
paraprofessional, Title 1 tutor,
general education teacher,
special education teacher
and inclusion facilitator,
Laurie brings a wide variety
of experience, perspectives, and expertise
to the education of children with disabilities.
Laurie has had significant training in the many
areas of educating students with disabilities and
holds graduate certificates in Intellectual and
Development Disabilities and Autism Spectrum
Disorders.
Jason Paradis
Jason is an information
technology professional.
Jason has been with the IOD
since 2005 serving in various
information technology
functions and as a web
developer. His current interests
include the accessibility of new IT equipment
and websites as well as the development of
protocols for accessibility testing.
Phyllis Watson, CCC-SLP
Phyllis Watson, a staff member
of Crotched Mountain ATECH
Services, is a speech-language
pathologist and AAC specialist
with more than 25 years of
experience working with
children, adolescents, and
adults with severe disabilities in a variety of
settings, including nursing homes, hospitals,
developmental day programs, and public
schools. She has also taught courses at several
universities and has presented at local and
national conferences.
Therese Willkomm, Ph.D.,
ATP
Dr. Willkomm directs the NH
Statewide Assistive Technology
Program (ATinNH) with the
IOD, is a clinical assistant
professor in the UNH Dept.
of Occupational Therapy, and
coordinates the graduate certificate in assistive
technology and the disability studies minor.
Known internationally as “The MacGyver of
Assistive Technology,” Dr. Willkomm has provided
assistive technology services for over 28 years
and authored 22 publications.
