April 8, 2016 Meeting
Minutes

Meeting was called to order at 2:30 pm by D. Palmer

Curricular Proposals:
College of Business Administration: Requesting WIC status for MIS 44445, Global Human
Resource Management. This proposal had been previously submitted and the URCC requested
clarification on the writing requirements and syllabus information. D. Knapp was present to
address questions. In response to questions regarding the amount of writing required in the
course, it was explained that students will write on five case studies. Each will be two to three
pages in length in an executive summary format which is the expected writing style in business.
A motion to approve the proposal was made by C. Stillings and seconded by E. Robison. The
motion was approved unanimously.
Old Business:
URCC reviewed a draft memo regarding its reaction to the revision of the Kent Core listing in
the University Catalog. This topic had been discussed at the previous meeting. Minor revisions
to the memo were suggested. URCC discussed sending the memo to Therese Tillett, Director of
Curriculum Services, with Provost Diacon and Faculty Senate Chair Williams copied (as CoChairs of the Educational Policies Council). A motion to approve this course of action was
made by E. Sinclair and seconded by C. Stillings. The motion was approved unanimously. D.
Palmer will send the memo.
New Business:
Faculty Senate Chair L. Williams distributed a draft brochure explaining the Kent Core to
incoming students. It will outline the benefits of the Kent Core in the academic careers of the
undergraduate students. Some revisions were suggested:
-emphasize why the Kent Core is beneficial for students
-also include how to approach the Kent Core
-edit some of the longer passages emphasizing five or so important elements
-make the website address more prominent
-correct that basic science labs can be taken after the related course
G. Steinberg agreed to work with L. Williams on these to the brochure.
Additionally URCC discussed the need for additional training for advisors to articulate the goals
of the Kent Core to students. It also was suggested that a return to the name, the Liberal
Education Requirements, might be appropriate.
The next meeting is scheduled for Friday, May 13, 2016 at 2:30 pm.
