UNIVERSITY OF WARWICK DEP A R T M E N T OF GER M A N STU D I E S MODERN GERMAN LANGUAGE I German and Business Studies Examinations You will take three examinations in the summer term: 1. Prose and Composition GE 1012 (3 hours) This paper consists of three sections: a. A comprehension exercise (40%) Here the aim is to enable you to write decent German. You should not be content with simply reproducing the original, but should aim to demonstrate your command of structures, vocabulary and register. Don’t pitch your answers simply at the level of simple one clause sentences, all consisting simply of a subject, verb and object. Remember there are other verbs in German apart from machen and kriegen! b. A passage of English for translation into German. (40%) This is deliberately kept short (approx. 300 words) to enable you to focus on grammatical accuracy. It is not primarily a vocabulary test. Its main aim is to test your command of all the grammar areas dealt with in class throughout the year. c. A letter in German, approximately 100 words long. (20%) This involves writing to a precise specification. You should observe the usual German conventions regarding forms of address, an appropriate register, and the correct way of signing off. 2. Translation into English GE1011 (3 hours) You have to translate two passages into English. One of these texts will focus on a more business related topic. For further guidelines on translation technique see the attached sheet on Translation. 3. An oral examination (15 mins) You will be asked to talk on a prepared topic. Before Reading Week in term 2 you will receive a set of exercises to complete over Reading week. These will form the basis of the Midterm Grammar test in week 7 of term 2. This is a compulsory internal Grammar test which will help you and your teacher to chart your progress and identify which Grammar topics need still more practice.
