Graduate school is forged with emotions and wrought by experiences. Today, I hope those emotions will be ones of celebration and the experiences, ones of camaraderie and self-betterment. We've been working all year to make this day one such day. Regardless of your role-presenter,judge, or spectator-we're happy you're here. This year's theme, A World of Research, was inspired by the holiday with which our event coincides this year: Earth Day. To show our commitment to the ideals of this day, we have taken steps to reduce the ecological impact of our event as we planned this event. In addition, we will be planting an American elm tree on Front Campus to celebrate our event. We can only hope that this tree will experience the same exuberant growth as the event that it commemorates. Only six years ago, this event hosted only 40 presenters, and this year are very proud to report more than 320 presenters! This sort of success would have been impossible, first and foremost, without the efforts of many graduate-student senators and volunteers. Also, the GSS executive board has invested countless person-hours into making this day a success, and a number of committees, including an actual task force, were assembled from the GSS to aid in the planning for this event. Nearly 100 faculty members have volunteered to judge today's event, and I cannot adeguately express my gratitude for their taking the time to help adjudicate our record number of presentations. Finally, I am thrilled and very thankful that this year's keynote speaker is Dr. Paul DiCorleto, who is himself a champion of research, and we should all be excited to learn from the experiences and wisdom he will share with us this afternoon. I hope that you learn about something new today. Sincerely, Morgan E. By serving as an allocation body, the Graduate Student Senate is responsible for assisting with graduate student travel and research funding. Additionally, the Graduate Student Senate organizes and provides financial support for social activities for graduate students. Each spring the Graduate Student Senate sponsors the Graduate Research Symposium, an event that displays, recognizes, and celebrates research and scholarship across all academic disciplines. The Graduate Student Senate meets four times each semester, and lunch is always provided. The Friday following each general meeting, a social event known as Grad Fest is held at a local establishment. All graduate students are welcome to become involved with the Graduate Student Senate.
