BEST PRACTICES FOR GRADING & EVALUATION

Clearly communicate your expectations for assignments.
●
Where applicable, provide students with a rubric.
●
Clearly communicate your policy on late work in the syllabus.
●
Provide timely feedback and set grading expectations early in the semester.
●
Set your own course policies for the timing of feedback.
●
Set time aside for grading during the week.
●
Provide both scores and meaningful, quality comments where possible to help students improve.
●
Space out your grading to avoid fatigue or frustration.
●
Set a timer to prevent you from spending too much time on one paper.
●
Keep records of student grade disputes.
●
Hold virtual office hours for online classes to give feedback on assignments.
●
In addition to the usual end of class survey evaluations completed by students, ask students for informal
feedback on your class content and teaching methods.
●
Talk to fellow TAs to share strategies on teaching and grading.
●
Become familiar with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA). This law
protects the privacy of student records and grades.
