BEST PRACTICES FOR GRADING & EVALUATION ● Clearly communicate your expectations for assignments. ● Where applicable, provide students with a rubric. ● Clearly communicate your policy on late work in the syllabus. ● Provide timely feedback and set grading expectations early in the semester. ● Set your own course policies for the timing of feedback. ● Set time aside for grading during the week. ● Provide both scores and meaningful, quality comments where possible to help students improve. ● Space out your grading to avoid fatigue or frustration. ● Set a timer to prevent you from spending too much time on one paper. ● Keep records of student grade disputes. ● Hold virtual office hours for online classes to give feedback on assignments. ● In addition to the usual end of class survey evaluations completed by students, ask students for informal feedback on your class content and teaching methods. ● Talk to fellow TAs to share strategies on teaching and grading. ● Become familiar with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA). This law protects the privacy of student records and grades.
