WelcometotheEasternMichiganUniversityAthleticTrainingProgram.Wewould
liketotakethisopportunitytoofferyouasmuchinformationaboutthisprogramas
possible.Thishandbookisdesignedtoactasyourguideandtoinformyouofthe
policiesandproceduresincludedintheAthleticTrainingProgramatEastern
MichiganUniversity.Thishandbookwillassistusinconveyingtoyou,thestudent,
theexpectationsthatwehaveofyouasanathletictrainingstudentprogressing
throughthisprogram.
ItisourgoalthateveryathletictrainingstudentinthisprogrambecomesawellqualifiedCertifiedAthleticTrainer.Thisprogramwillofferyoueveryopportunity
tofulfilltheBoardofCertification’srequirementsforcertification.Itisuptoyou,the
student,totakefulladvantageoftheseopportunities,sothatyoucanbecomea
successfulAthleticTrainer.
TheEMUAthleticTrainingProgramandits’facultyandstaffareexpectingyouto
makeacommitmenttothisprogramandtobecomeadependable,responsibleand
skilledmemberofthisprogram.Youwillbeexpectedtoactdiligentlyandlearnto
takeonresponsibilitiesassignedtoyouduringyourtenureinthisprogram,ina
matureandprofessionalmanner.

ProgramAccreditationInformation
TheCommissiononAccreditationofAthleticTrainingEducation(CAATE)accredits
theEMUAthleticTrainingProgram.Thisprogramwasawardedwithitsinitial
accreditationinOctoberof1997.
TheEMUAthleticTrainingFacultywillkeepallstudentsuptodateonthestatusof
thisprocess.PleasefeelfreetocontactanymemberoftheAthleticTrainingFaculty
ifyouhaveanyquestionsorconcernsregardingthismatter.

ProgramMissionandObjectives
MissionStatementoftheEasternMichiganUniversityAthleticTrainingProgram
EasternMichiganUniversity’sAthleticTrainingProgramiscommittedto
distinguishingitselfasacomprehensive,educationalprogram.Outstandingdidactic
andclinicalinstructionwillenablestudentstopasstheBOCexam,preparingthem
tobeindependent,contributingmembersofsociety,specificallywithinalliedhealth
careprofessions.
ATHLETICTRAININGPROGRAMOBJECTIVES
1.
ToprovideaprogramthatleadstoaBachelorofScienceinAthleticTraining.

Torecruitstudentsthatarehighlymotivatedandwillbeabletosuccessfully
completethebasicstudiesandcorerequirementfortheAthleticTraining
Program.

Toensurethatstudentsobtainallskillsnecessarytocompletethedefined
curriculum,sitfortheBOCcertificationexamination,andserveasacertified
athletictrainerintheglobalcommunity.
4.
Encouragethoughtfuldialogueandengageinproblemsolving,critical
thinkingandanalysiswithrespecttoallaspectsofathletictraining.
5.
Toprovideanenvironmentthatisconsistentwithexcellenceandconducive
totheteachingandlearningofathletictrainingknowledgeandskills.

Asastudententeringintothefieldofathletictraining,itisvitalthatyouareaware
oftheessentialfunctionsoftheprofessionofathletictraining.Thesefunctionsare
incorporatedintothe5DomainsofAthleticTraining.Thesedomainswillbe

ApplyingfortheAthleticTrainingProgram
PleasebeadvisedthatstudentsareonlyallowedtoapplytotheATPtwotimes
duringtheiracademiccareeratEMU.
Non-discriminatoryPolicy
Allstudentsareevaluatedforacceptanceintotheprogrambasedonthecriteria
stated.Nooneshallbediscriminatedbasedonrace,culture,ageorreligion.This
includesthePracticumIacceptanceaswellastheFirstYearReview.
TransferPolicy
StudentsmaytransferintotheAthleticTrainingProgramintheSchoolofHealth
PromotionandHumanPerformanceatanytime.CompletionoftheATPwillrequire
aminimumofthreeyears.Allprofessionalcourses(ATTR,SPMD)inathletic
trainingmustbecompletedatEasternMichiganUniversity.Theprogram
coordinatormayevaluateindividualcoursesfortransfer.
AthleticTrainingProgramPracticumIApplicationInformation
StudentswhoareinterestedinmajoringinAthleticTrainingatEasternMichigan
UniversitymustapplyforadmissionintotheAthleticTrainingProgram.The
AthleticTrainingProgramadmitsalimitednumberofstudentseachFallSemester.
Theprogramisadualadmittanceprogram.StudentsmustapplytothePracticumI
clinicalcourse.Ifaccepted,studentsareconsideredanAthleticTrainingmajor.After
thecompletionofthePracticumIsemesterthestudentsgothrougha“FirstYear
Review”inordertobeallowedtocontinueintheprogram.Thisallowsthestudent
andATPprogramtodetermineiftheindividualmeetsthecriteriatocontinueonin
theprogram.TheAthleticTrainingProgramfacultyandadvisorycommitteereview
allstudentapplications.

StudentsthatcompletethePracticumIsemesterwillbegiventheopportunityto
applyfora“FirstYear”review.Tobeginthereviewprocess,thestudentwill
completeanapplicationforcontinuationintheAthleticTrainingProgram.In
addition,thestudentwillsitforaninterviewwiththeAthleticTrainingProgram
advisorycommittee.Theinterviewwillconsistofareviewoftheapplication,review
ofthePracticumIStudentPerformanceEvaluations,questionstoevaluateclinical

ProgramRetention
TheAthleticTrainingProgramreservestherighttoimmediatelyremoveastudent
fromtheprogramwhoviolatesethical,studentconductcodeand/orprofessional
behaviorasdescribedbytheEasternMichiganUniversityOfficeofStudentConduct,
AthleticDepartmentandtheAthleticTrainingProgramManual.
Onceastudenthassuccessfullypassedthe“FirstYearReview”processtheymust
meetthefollowingguidelines:
• Maintainaminimum2.8GPA
• SuccessfullycompleteeachATTRcourseonthefirstorsecondattempt
withaminimumgradeof“B”
o FailuretoreceiveaBorbetteronthefirstattemptwillcausethe
studenttocompleteaonecredit“remedial”coursepriorto
movingontoanycoursesthatutilizesaidclassasaprerequisite.
StudentswillmeetwiththeProgramCoordinatortodiscussthe
requirementsandexpectationsoftheremedialcourse.
o FailuretoreceiveaBorbetterinthe“remedial”coursewillcause
thestudenttoberemovedfromtheprogram.
o Failuretopassthefinalexamofaremedialcoursewitha75%or
higherwillcausethestudenttohavetoretaketheinitialcourse
anddelayanycoursesthattheinitialcourseisapre-requisitefor.
• Studentswillberemovedfromtheprogramiftheyhavetotakemore
thantworemedialcoursesduringtheirtenureintheprogram.
• Adheretotheuniversitystudentcode.
• EthicalCyberActivity(SocialMedia)–AthleticTrainingStudentsshould,
undernocircumstances,portraythemselvesinawaythatmayaffecta
person’sperceptionofEasternMichiganUniversity’sAthleticTraining
ProgramorAthleticDepartmentinanegativeway.Acaseofcyberethical
abusecanresultinimmediateremovalfromtheAthleticTraining
Program. (ThiswillbedeterminedbytheATPProgramCoordinator,
ClinicalEducationCoordinatorandwhenappropriatethesupervising
preceptor.)
o TheATPreservestherighttoremoveastudentduetoan
outstandingcircumstancethatmayaffectthestudent’sabilityto
continueonintheprogramsuccessfully.Thisincludesbutisnot
limitedtochangesinstudents’abilitytoadheretothetechnical
standards,student’sdemeanorduringtheclinicalexperience,
failuretoadheretothecyberethicalstandard,etc.

student’seducationalexperience.

permissionandsupervisionfromacertifiedathletictrainer.

Appearance
AthleticTrainingStudentsshouldbedressedtolookneatandprofessionalatall
timeswhenintheirclinicaleducationsetting.Rememberyouarenotonlytryingto
makeagoodimpression;youarerepresentingtheEMUAthleticTrainingProgram.
Youareahealthcareprofessionalandshouldlookthepart.
Thedresscodeisasfollows:
• NOjeans,hatsorsunglassesinside,orT-shirtswithprofanity,alcoholordrug
advertisements.
• Youarerequiredtowearnicekhaki/blackslacksorshortsandanEMU
athletictraining/sportsmedicineshirtortop.Youmaywearanappropriate
non-sportsmedicinepoloorsweater.
• Youmaywearspecificteamissuedapparel(nosweatpants)
• Youmaywearnicetennisshoesordressshoesbutnosandals,slidesor
crocs.Allshoesmustbeclosedtoedandsocksshouldbewornatalltimes.
• Tight/formfittingclothingor“revealing”clothingisnotappropriateforthe
athletictrainingroom(includingyogapantsandleggings)
• Shirtsmustbecleanandtuckedin.(Anyloseclothingandotherattiremaybe
ahazardaroundsomeofthemachinesandinstruments)
• Eachsitemayhavespecificrulesandguidelinesinregardstoappropriate
attire.Pleasemakesurethatyoufollowtheirguidelinesaswell.
• Beneatinappearanceandtakepersonalpride.Thisincludesusingpersonal
discretionintheareasoffacialhair,hairstyleandjewelry.Ifyouare

thenextpracticumunlessthesedutiesarefollowedandcompletedtothe

EveryATSisexpectedtoattend2EMUeventspersemestertoallowthe

areusedforcorrespondencefromthefacultyandstafftothestudents.Mailboxes

AthleticTrainingfacultyandPreceptorswillcorrespondregularlyviaemailtothe
AthleticTrainingstudents.Ifstudentsdonotusetheir“myemich”accountastheir
primaryemail,theyshouldforwardtheir“myemich”accounttoamoreregularly
usedemailaddress.Studentsshouldcheckemailfrequently,astostayinformedof

IntroductoryMeetings
EachstudentwhoregistersforaPracticumcoursewithintheAthleticTraining
Programwillbeassignedaclinicaleducationassignmentasarequirementfor
successfulcompletionofthepracticum.Duringthisclinicaleducationassignment,
eachstudentwillbeassignedtoaPreceptorwhowill,atthestartofeachstudent’s
newclinicaleducationassignment,providethestudentwithanintroductory
meeting,whichwilladdresstheexpectationsoftheClinicaleducationassignment.
IssuesincludingEAPs,attendance,clinicalresponsibilitiesandduties,dress,etc.,

ItisrequiredthatAthleticTrainingStudentswearanametagduringthePracticumI
Clinicaleducationalassignment.Studentsareexpectedtobuyanametagthrough
theEagleCardofficeatthebeginningoftheirPracticumI.Studentswillbeprovided

In-servicesforAthleticTrainingStudents
TheEMUAthleticTrainingProgramregularlyoffers“In-service”opportunitiesfor
studentsenrolledintheprogram.AttendanceisMANDATORYatallin-service
presentationsasapartofyouracceptanceintotheAthleticTrainingProgram.OffCampusaffiliationandinternshipATstudentsarenotrequiredtoattendthese
meetingsduringthesemestertheyareoffcampus.
In-servicesareofferedasauniqueopportunitytoexpandyourknowledgeand
experienceinthefieldofAthleticTraining.Thestaffandstudentorganizationmake
everyefforttotailorthesepresentationstomaximizethequalityofyoureducation.
ItisencouragebytheATPthatallATstudentstakeadvantageoftheseeducational
opportunities.
CodeofConductforAthleticTrainingStudents
AthleticTrainingstudentsareexpectedtoconductthemselvesinaprofessional
mannerduringboththeclassroomexperienceandtheclinicaleducationassignment
oftheAthleticTrainingProgram.Duringastudent’sclinicaleducation,itisexpected
thatthestudentkeepallinterpersonalrelationshipswithfellowstudents,staff,
patients,athletes,coaches,administrators,etc.,strictlyprofessionalatalltimes.

Thisrelationshipiscomplex.Whilefriendshipsarenotdiscourageditisimportant
thattheATSunderstandhis/herroleasaprofessional.Personalfeelingsfora
student-athleteshouldnotinterfere.TheATShasaprofessionalresponsibilityto
thestudent-athletethatdoesnotallowforcompromise.Theathletictraining
studentmustalsounderstandtheimportanceofconfidentiality.Actingwith
integrityandloyaltyisessentialatalltimes.Allathletictrainingstudentsmusttreat
eachstudent-athletethatentersanathletictrainingvenuewiththeSAME
professionalcourtesy,respect,andassistance.Intimaterelationshipsarenot
encouragedwithintercollegiatestudent-athletes.Thiscompromisesthe
professionalrelationshipbetweentheATSandthestudent-athlete.Ifthisdoes
developyoumustinformyourPreceptor.Youwillnotbeallowedtocompleteyour
clinicaleducationwiththePreceptorwhosupervisestheteamthestudent-athleteis
on.Ifitisdiscoveredthatyouaredatingastudent-athleteandhavenotinformed
yourPreceptoryouwillbewrittenupandmayberemovedfromtheprogram
immediately.Wecannottellyouwhomyoucandate,butyoumustkeepus

Theguidelinesofeachaffiliatedsitemustbefollowed.TheATSisnotallowedto

should,undernocircumstances,askanyoftheabove-mentionedindividuals
formonetaryorvaluablefavors(teamclothing,eventtickets,etc.)during
theirclinicaleducationassignment.
• Smoking,chewingtobacco,consumptionofalcoholicbeverages,ortheuseof
illegaldrugsduringanyoftheeducationalcomponentsorathletictraining
experiencesincludingbutnotlimitedtosummercampcoverage,special
eventcoverage,volunteeropportunitiesetc.oftheAthleticTrainingProgram
arestrictlyprohibited.Pleasemakesureyouarefollowingpersonalhygiene
anddonotshowuptoyourClinicaleducationalassignmentssmellingof
smoke.Ifyoudo,yourPreceptormayaskyoutoleavetochangeclothes.This
isahealthcareprofessionandwedonotwanttorepresentourprofessionin

ClinicalEducationAssignmentsforAthleticTrainingStudents
AthleticTrainingStudentsatEasternMichiganUniversityarerequired,asapartof
theAthleticTrainingCurriculum,totakeaseriesof5Practicumcoursesand
completeaninternship.Practicumcoursesincludevariouscomponents,whicheach
studentmustsuccessfullycompleteinordertograduate.Oneofthesecomponents
isclinicaleducation.Duringtheclinicaleducationcomponentastudentisassigned
toaPreceptor.Studentswillreceiveclinicalinstructionandsupervisionfroma
CertifiedAthleticTrainer/Preceptororsupervisionfromanotherhealthcare

ForPreceptorsandotherhealthcareprofessionalwhosupervisetheclinical
educationassignmentofAthleticTrainingStudents
ViolationsofATPmanualincluding,butnotlimitedto:
• ATSnotfollowingtheATPdresscode.
• ATSleavesacontestorpracticewithoutfirstcheckingwiththePreceptorto
seeifanythingisneeded.
• ATSnothavingthenecessarysuppliesavailableforpracticesandgames.
• ATSnotbeingontimetoapracticeorevent.
• ATSnotattendingapracticeoreventwithoutlettingthePreceptorknow.
PermissionfromthePreceptorisrequiredforanyATSabsence.
• ATSnotbeingontimetoclinicaleducationassignmentincludingin-services
• ATSviolatestheconfidentialityoftheathletictrainingroom.
Decisionsrelatedtoprogramsuspensionanddismissalisleftuptothe
discretionoftheAthleticTrainingProgramCoordinator.
Processforwritingastudentup:
1. Providethestudentwithaclearexplanationofhis/hermisconductand
informthemthataformalwrite-upwilloccur.
2. CompletetheStudentViolationformlocatedontheATracksystem,including
allnecessarydetails.
3. SignanddatetheReport.
4. ShowcompletedReporttothestudent,andaskthestudenttosignthe
report.(Signingthereportonlyacknowledgesthestudenthasreceivedit,not
thattheyagreewithit.)
5. Sendanemailtotheclinicaleducationcoordinatorlettingthemknowofthe
situationwithinaweekoftheviolation.
ReportwillbereviewedandsignedbytheClinicalEducationCoordinatororthe
AthleticTrainingProgramCoordinator.TheClinicalEducationCoordinatorwill
forwardacopyofthereporttotheProgramCoordinatoranduploaditintothe
student’sportfolioonATrack.
Acopyofthereportwillbeplacedinthestudent’spermanentfileinATrack.
• Decisionsrelatedtoprogramsuspensionanddismissalisleftuptothe
discretionoftheAthleticTrainingProgramCoordinator.
• Studentswhoreceivethree“writeups”willundergoareviewbytheATP
ProgramCoordinatorandClinicalcoordinatortodetermineifhe/shewill
continueonintheprogram.

Afterthereviewoftheviolation(s)arecommendationwillbemadebythe
AthleticTrainingProgramCoordinator,andwillbeforwardedtothe
ChairoftheSchoolofHealthPromotionandHumanPerformance.
TheATPProgramreservestherighttoimmediatelyremoveastudentdue
toanoutstandingcircumstancethatmayaffectthestudent’sabilityto
continueonintheprogramsuccessfully.Thisincludesbutisnotlimited
tochangesinstudent’sabilitytoadheretothetechnicalstandards,
students’demeanorduringtheclinicalexperience,failuretoadhereto
thecyberethicalstandard,etc.
