AthleticTrainingProgramPracticumIApplicationInformation StudentswhoareinterestedinmajoringinAthleticTrainingatEasternMichigan UniversitymustapplyforadmissionintotheAthleticTrainingProgram.The AthleticTrainingProgramadmitsalimitednumberofstudentseachFallSemester. Onceastudenthassuccessfullypassedthe“FirstYearReview”processtheymust meetthefollowingguidelines: • Maintainaminimum2.8GPA • SuccessfullycompleteeachATTRcourseonthefirstorsecondattempt withaminimumgradeof“B” o FailuretoreceiveaBorbetteronthefirstattemptwillcausethe studenttocompleteaonecredit“remedial”coursepriorto movingontoanycoursesthatutilizesaidclassasaprerequisite. Whatdefines“supervisionofclinicaleducationinanAthleticTrainingProgram”? StudentMailboxes AllstudentsenrolledintheAthleticTrainingProgramwillbeassignedamailbox, whichislocatedinBowenResourceRoomforAthleticTraining.Pleasebesureto checkyourmailboxatleastonceperweekduringeachsemester.Thesemailboxes areusedforcorrespondencefromthefacultyandstafftothestudents.Mailboxes canalsobeusedtostorenametags,etc.Pleasechecktheseonaregularbasis.Even ifyouareatanoff-campussiteyouareresponsiblefortheinformationputinyour mailbox. IntroductoryMeetings EachstudentwhoregistersforaPracticumcoursewithintheAthleticTraining Programwillbeassignedaclinicaleducationassignmentasarequirementfor successfulcompletionofthepracticum.Duringthisclinicaleducationassignment, eachstudentwillbeassignedtoaPreceptorwhowill,atthestartofeachstudent’s newclinicaleducationassignment,providethestudentwithanintroductory meeting,whichwilladdresstheexpectationsoftheClinicaleducationassignment. IssuesincludingEAPs,attendance,clinicalresponsibilitiesandduties,dress,etc., willbediscussedindetail.ItistheresponsibilityoftheSTUDENTtocontacthis/her Preceptorifthereareanyquestionsconcerninganyoftheseissuesdiscussedduring theintroductorymeeting. In-servicesforAthleticTrainingStudents TheEMUAthleticTrainingProgramregularlyoffers“In-service”opportunitiesfor studentsenrolledintheprogram.AttendanceisMANDATORYatallin-service presentationsasapartofyouracceptanceintotheAthleticTrainingProgram.OffCampusaffiliationandinternshipATstudentsarenotrequiredtoattendthese meetingsduringthesemestertheyareoffcampus. In-servicesareofferedasauniqueopportunitytoexpandyourknowledgeand experienceinthefieldofAthleticTraining.Thestaffandstudentorganizationmake everyefforttotailorthesepresentationstomaximizethequalityofyoureducation. CodeofConductforAthleticTrainingStudents AthleticTrainingstudentsareexpectedtoconductthemselvesinaprofessional mannerduringboththeclassroomexperienceandtheclinicaleducationassignment oftheAthleticTrainingProgram.Duringastudent’sclinicaleducation,itisexpected thatthestudentkeepallinterpersonalrelationshipswithfellowstudents,staff, patients,athletes,coaches,administrators,etc.,strictlyprofessionalatalltimes. 22 ATSandtheintercollegiateStudent-athlete Thisrelationshipiscomplex.Whilefriendshipsarenotdiscourageditisimportant thattheATSunderstandhis/herroleasaprofessional.Personalfeelingsfora student-athleteshouldnotinterfere.TheATShasaprofessionalresponsibilityto thestudent-athletethatdoesnotallowforcompromise.Theathletictraining studentmustalsounderstandtheimportanceofconfidentiality.Actingwith integrityandloyaltyisessentialatalltimes.Allathletictrainingstudentsmusttreat eachstudent-athletethatentersanathletictrainingvenuewiththeSAME professionalcourtesy,respect,andassistance.Intimaterelationshipsarenot encouragedwithintercollegiatestudent-athletes.Thiscompromisesthe professionalrelationshipbetweentheATSandthestudent-athlete.Ifthisdoes developyoumustinformyourPreceptor.Youwillnotbeallowedtocompleteyour clinicaleducationwiththePreceptorwhosupervisestheteamthestudent-athleteis on.Ifitisdiscoveredthatyouaredatingastudent-athleteandhavenotinformed yourPreceptoryouwillbewrittenupandmayberemovedfromtheprogram immediately.Wecannottellyouwhomyoucandate,butyoumustkeepus informedoftheserelationships.Ifyouhaveanyquestionsregardingthispleasetalk totheATPProgramCoordinatororClinicalEducationCoordinator. Acopyofthereportwillbeplacedinthestudent’spermanentfileinATrack. • Decisionsrelatedtoprogramsuspensionanddismissalisleftuptothe discretionoftheAthleticTrainingProgramCoordinator. • Studentswhoreceivethree“writeups”willundergoareviewbytheATP ProgramCoordinatorandClinicalcoordinatortodetermineifhe/shewill continueonintheprogram. 30 • • Afterthereviewoftheviolation(s)arecommendationwillbemadebythe AthleticTrainingProgramCoordinator,andwillbeforwardedtothe ChairoftheSchoolofHealthPromotionandHumanPerformance. TheATPProgramreservestherighttoimmediatelyremoveastudentdue toanoutstandingcircumstancethatmayaffectthestudent’sabilityto continueonintheprogramsuccessfully.Thisincludesbutisnotlimited tochangesinstudent’sabilitytoadheretothetechnicalstandards, students’demeanorduringtheclinicalexperience,failuretoadhereto thecyberethicalstandard,etc. 31
